We deal with it and don't cry like little babies.
I was watching Eastbound and Down on HBO the other day and realized how much I need commercials. I need a break every little while.

Here's a great solution:
When commercials come on, change the channel!

We are capitalistic society. People need to make money. It's how they get their messages out there. How else would we know without the adverts?
And I've been to the UK, you guys have just as many adverts so what are you complaining about?

What if you want to watch Raw/Final episode of Lost/American Football live? Then you man the up and watch it. Good god, it's not the end of the world that the US features slightly longer commercials. Or you be smart and record the show afterwords so you don't miss anything.

It's not really a big deal, we're used to it so we don't really care.

I am glad it's the way it is in the UK. Whenever I watch something on american television it seems whenever anything gets interesting it goes to a break.

I'm actually surprised TV commercials aren't even longer. Production companies take advantage of the fact that they only have to film 16-18 minutes for a 30 minute show. To make an example, you are seeing a lot of pause moments in very popular animations now such as South Park and Family Guy. Of course, pause moments are intended to be funny, but are really the result of lazy production companies who want to save and earn as much money as possible. With non-animated shows that are massive in terms of popularity such as Two and a Half Men, there are moments where audience laughing is extended by seconds, and the end of jokes are also extended. How many times do you see a "What happened last episode" and "If you are just tuning in, this just happened: " - In fact, I couldn't even watch WWE anymore because of so many replays and promo's.
Also, the more time available to show commercials, makes the show and it's network much much more money. I vision our 15 minute shows becoming 12-13 minutes soon. Once networks come together to make something similar to TiVo, they might even become 10 minute shorts, similar to what we already stream from Youtube.

Some UK programs are starting to do this because American shows are designed this way but in general UK tv has always has a structure of ad break at every quarter on the clock, so 15 minutes past, half past, quarter to and o clock.

But you're blocks for shows do have adverts in between them. We just happen to program our patterns so that people watching certain shows will see the adverts that pay the channels to play them while they are actually watching the tv instead of playing them when they knew the person may or may not be watching. It's called smart business.

Adverts are annoying as . And to all those people who said 'to have a piss break' , sorry but if you need a piss every 15 minutes you have problems.

The fact you're saying that American commercials are ridiculous and you live in England truly says something negative about you... Don't complain about everything especially if it doesn't effect you in any way.

It's always been like that here. We've grown up with it, so we're used to it. Well, it is worse than when we were kids, but it was done so gradually that we were weened into accepting it. I don't usually fret much. I'm rarely ever watching TV when I'm not also doing something else. And if I am, it's TCM or something else without commercials.
