So I have been really out of touch with video games latley and I was wondering What's the best NBA game out there? I want something along the lines of "NBA 2K5" as far a playability goes.

NBA 2k9.
2k10 comes out 10/6...just wait for that. Stay far, far, away from the NBA Live series. It's awful.

Or on the other hand, check out the NBA Live series. ...at least NBA Live 10. I haven't played a Live game since '05, but I've gotten incredibly bored of 2K's gameplay engine. The sliding and random animations/AI annoy the hell out of me now. If you go 2K, go NBA 2K8. I think 2K has hit their ceiling.
Live may have sucked perviously, but it's looking like it's turning things around. At least, it appears that way from a guy who ditched the series five years ago.

I don't know what 2k9 game you played, but the 360 version I got was a GREAT game. I played NBA Live...it was awful. It's an arcade style basketball game with NO realistic feel whatsoever. I have zero faith in it "improving." EVERY year people say "I think this is the year they turn the corner"...and it just gets worse. The NBA Live series does not even compare to the NBA 2k series.

I don't know what 2k9 game you played, but the 360 version I got was a GREAT game. I had PS3. No idea what differences, if any are between the two. I'm not going to debate this, because it's true. Thus far, 2K has kicked Live's ass. I could get a good game out of 2K, but it took a lot of slider adjustments. Obviously not perfect (no game is) but really good. Then I just got tired of being taken out of the game because the animation took over and slid me where I didn't want to go. Little things like the wrong animation taking over just eventually annoyed me. I've seen more than enough players go with the two-hand overhead pass to a guy three feet away, only to get the ball handed right back off. I've had shots missed and turnovers happen when my man under the basket goes up and lays the ball off the back of the backboard. I will chalk some bad shots up to user error, but for me, it happens too often. I've been buying 2K basketball games since they hit the PS2, and haven't bought a Live since 05. My experience with next-gen Live is limited to the demo's, which I have hated due to super speedy players and bad animations...but having played so much 2K, I feel confident pointing out its' flaws. It can play a hell of a game, but it also has issues that annoy the crap out of me. Live may end up being a mediocre game again, but for someone that's played so much of one style of game for this long, Live 10 is looking like a nice change of pace.

I agree that there are SOME flaws with 2k9, like the behind the backboard shot...but that would seriously happen to me once every 10 games, so it's not something that really effected me. A buddy of mine and I went through websites and such, and got sliders that made games really fun to play. I'd win, I'd lose and I'd have some really fun games. So that was never a problem for me. I can say however, that I will not buy a NBA live game as long as 2k keeps putting out the games they put out. I've bought NBA live and taken it back to get 2k9. I used to LOVE the NBA Live series on PS1...then it just got really, really bad and had such an unrealistic arcade like feel.
