i was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were and are on the sega dreamcast. the news of the uk sega consoles sparked this a bit, but i'm also considering picking one up soon enough as i myself don't have very much experience with one.
what'd you think of it? favourite games? bad aspects? price?
i think it's wild how it's hd capable.

The Dreamcast and it's top tier games hold up REMARKABLY well in this new generation. It wasn't REALLY HD. It had a VGA adapter that let you play on HD sets, but in 480p like the Wii.
The Sonic Adventures, Soul Calibur is still one of the highest ranked video games of all time, the NFL 2k games, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, the Power Stones, Ready 2 Rumble, Space Channel 5, Seaman, and my personal favorite, ChuChu Rocket.
You can actually still play a handful of DC games online still if you can figure it out for some of them. Quake III, Sega Swirl, and the ever lovely Phantasy Star Online can still be played.

Sega.com actually sold a broadband adapter, but it came out late in the consoles life cycle, but they have gone on to be quite the collectors item and don't go for TOO much.

Prepare for coolstorybro/tl;dr
Sega Dreamcast was always sorta an enigma for me. It's one of those systems I was interested in, but never had the opportunity to play. I went right from PS1 to PS2 as a kid. I always wanted to try out the new Sonics and stuff. In retrospect, I think it was good that I skipped the system and didn't drop time and money on it due to it's lack of support and short lifespan.
I bought a Gamecube just to play Sonic Adventure 2 (and 1 came out later, don't really know why that order was reversed) and I really enjoyed them. People give them mixed reviews, but I think they're great, especially when you consider them in comparison to PS1 and N64 games. In May of this year, I kicked off what I like to call my Summer of Dreamcast... I found a lone DC for 2 dollars. After ordering wires and realizing it works, I started hoarding a library, trading games with freinds who didnt play it anymore, and enjoying it... then, it kinda broke and I bought a new(er) one off Ebay for 40 bucks with THPS1 (best version), four controllers, and a legit VMU (LOVE these memory cards). The controller, call it a spaceship, I don't care... it was cool and different. I liked the analog stick, I liked the trigger buttons, and again, I loved the VMU and special screens that came with it.
I spent hours on Crazy Taxi, one of my favorite arcade games of all time. Daytona USA "2001," the update of another one of those arcade games I loved to play in the old days, and I spent a pretty good time trying to master it's wild controls. Despite never finishing a season out of frustration, this still was an ok 6 dollar game to play with freinds a few times.
I got Resident Evil 2 (since my original PS1 Claire disk was kinda worn through completley)... best version.. crisp graphics, and all the bonus features. RE3 was a disapointment and actually seemed downgraded from the PS1 version.
Shenmue is called the definative DC game by some. After going through two copies before finding one that works, I didn't really get into it. It seemed like a chore having to wait for certain times for events to happen. I just wanted to get through it. Sure, I spent time screwing around, talking to people, collecting toys, playing Hang-On, but there really wasnt enough action.... not enough fighting as I would have liked, not enough QTEs. Prehaps I was spoiled by breattaking, bigger, busier open world games like GTA, but Shenmue just didn't live up to the hype.
Jet Grind Radio, I liked the idea of it more than actually liking it. The art style, the music (Super Brothers FTW) were great, but I couldn't get into the physics and mashing the right trigger for speed boosts. I got about halfway through before it got frustratingly hard to me.
MvC2, while I probably shouldve downloaded it on XBLA when it came out but I prefer hard copies of games to digital..... was a great game. I played a crapload of this with my main partner in nerdom on PS2, it was like our go-to game if we didnt have anything to do, but I myself could never justify paying 50+ dollars for an old fighting game. So I got it for 20 something on DC. I always "mark out" when I can actually get Jill's Tyrant summon to work.
I'm sure I can go look at my stack and make more mini reviews, but these were the DC games that stood out to me in my short career. Oh, and I also acquired the SAs on DC... it just felt more.. right to play them on a Sega system instead of Nintendo.

I loved Sega Dreamcast. Me and my brother used to play NBA 2k1 and 2k2 on it all the time. I loved the old Pacman they had on there as well as Sonic Adventure. Coincidentally I'm actually playing Sonic Adventure on my Xbox...game is still ing awesome...

I love the Dreamcast. Personally, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are my favorite Sonic games out of the entire franchise. Shenmue 1 and 2 were spectacular and I really wish they could somehow fund the 3rd installment. Many great arcade-style fighters and shoot-em-ups came to life on that console. Grandia II was a great RPG and I loved Evolution I & II.
Honorable mention goes to Sonic Shuffle. Sure, it was a Mario Party rip-off, but it had its own feel.

The Dreamcast was a truly remarkable system! One of my favorite aspects are all the emulators available online for the classic game consoles such as NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, and SNES. In addition, you could play select PSX games on it with the Bleem! discs, such as GT 2 and other Playstation hits. Of course, it's own games were marvelous as well, Sonic Adventure 2 was a favorite of mine. It also included the best versions of WWF Attitude, Spider-Man, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and of course Marvel vs Capsom 2.

My nephew had the Dreamcast. I remember the controller being too chunky for my taste. Too bad this would be Sega's last console system
