Every one seems to have a story about that one game or level that was just so damn hard it made them temporarily question their sanity or contemplate just shelving the game altogether.
What are some of your most classic examples of such?
The thought came to me while trying to complete God of War. I'm playing the collection on PS3 and am up to the Cliffs of Madness Room of Spikes. I've watched walkthroughs, read walkthroughs, tried it virtually every which way possible and I simply cannot do it. I think I've tried a good one hundred times at this point, and I'm at a point of total frustration, to the extent that I'm starting to hate the game.

Oddly enough, shortly after I posted this, I finally got past the Room of Spikes and beat the game a couple hours later. Took me just about one hundred tries, but it felt nice to complete.
Plus there's always the great feeling of completing a game.

A lot of areas in the N64 Zelda games tended to annoy me. I like the games a lot, but I remember constantly getting a feeling of "ugh...am I done yet?" with some of the dungeons. I blame that more on me not playing in shorter bursts, as opposed to something being wrong with the game.
Too Human is a perfect example of a game being so roughly made that you have a hard time tolerating it. There was one point where I was being swarmed by enemies, and the games AWFUL handling of health regeneration became an issue. As if dieing over and over wasn't bad enough, the game had a resurrection animation that couldn't be skipped at all. So you had that to deal with on top of loading screens upon death. Just a complete mess of a game, despite me wanting to enjoy it.

Ninja Gaiden 2. By far the hardest game I have played, the final boss battle, well the final 4 straight boss battles with no save or place available to buy potions is just unreal. I would rather play any game on the hardest difficulty than go through that again.

Any Metal Gear Solid title on Euro Extreme used to suck for me. I can do it somewhat casually now but I HATED it back when I was younger.
Also, Star Fox 64, Star Wolf's return...hated it...

GTAIV, when you're almost done with a long mission and then you die only for you to do the mission all over again from the beginning.
Thank god they fixed that in TBOGT.

The Matriarch Benezia battle in Mass Effect 1. Up until that point I had played on Normal, and after trying about 10 times I dropped it down to Casual and have never played ME1 on anything other than Casual since.

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the mission Phnom Pehn '86 was frustrating, only because that was my first PS2 game and I wasn't too good at first person shooting. I stopped playing it for a few days then played it again and got it on the first go, now its my favourite mission on the game.
Continuing with Vice City, Vice City Stories had another pain in the ass mission called Light My Pyre. Endless amounts of enemies plus a lot of them were hiding behind corners and ridges, it didn't help that theres a bike chase at the beginning of the mission too.

Saints Row 2, basically most of the game, since for whatever crazy reason you have to fill up that "respect" meter before doing each mission. I spent more time trying fill up my respect meter than I did playing the actual game.

The dream/nightmare level in Max Payne Oh dear god yes. I gave up on the game after like 30 tries and just watched a playthrough on youtube.

The spin dash on Sonic Adventure, when you first get the shoes in the sewer. Can't do it. So I've beat the game with every character BUT Sonic.
