I'm interested in reading Final Crisis but to my understanding there are some tie ins for it. Can anybody tell me what is essential for it, other then the actual series, and do you reccomend it. Thanks.

Hmmm. Final Crisis is a mess. I don't think any of the tie-ins are going to actually help make it more complete, to be honest.
I'd make sure you have read Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Infinite Crisis before you read it. That will probably help more than the tie-ins.

I'm not sure if the Superman issues are included in the trade, but read those. I personally loved FC.

read Legion of 3 Worlds. thats a major tie-in and it was basically an event by itself. its the mini series that returned both Superboy and Bart Allen and its excellent. you should definitely read that. and Death of the New Gods is the series that leads directly into Final Crisis so you might wanna check that out too.

I don't have the final crisis tpb, but DC Universe #0 was sortof the prelude for the series, get Final Crisis Superman Beyond if it's not included, it explains where Superman was during the crisis.
Also, I second Legions of 3 worlds, excellent art and it features my favourite hero, Superman Prime.
