and the Starrcade ending wasn't... Anyone who would rather watch old farts like Hogan and Sting in the ring, rather than technical masterpieces with Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels is obviously a complete idiot. Boring? He put on the greatest matches known to man, I don't see how that's boring? and to your earlier comment, the Canada vs USA thing was dumb? It was amazing, and made, for me, 1997 the greatest year in WWF history. What was so special about WCW? Yeah the Sting/Hogan feud was great, but the matches sucked. the nWo was stale as hell, and the only good matches consisted of the cruiserweights...With WCW, I found you had to sit through the whole boring show, to get an exciting ending, with the WWF, it was exciting, for the most part, all the way through. How the hell was that an amazing storyline? Canada vs Bret didn't make sense at all for Bret's character always being for the fans. Sure, he was from Canada. WWE was trying the same thing that WCW was doing, turning one of the biggest faces heel, to see what would happen and it was just bad. and I don't care how good a match is, if there's a good story behind it, and I can't stand behind a character, then I'm in that match. A technical masterpiece could be in the center of the ring, but I don't watching wrestling for wrestling, I was wrestler for entertainment, and that's where storylines coming in. and Hogan was entertaining as well as Sting, and the whole entire NWO/WCW storyline during the time. I'm a massive, massive, MASSIVE WCW mark, but even I'm not oblivious to the fact that from 1997 onwards WWE absolutely destroyed them and their product. You'd have to be insane to overlook WCW's failing product following '97.[/youtube] You sound like a WWE DVD WWE may have been good in 97, but it was NO WHERE on par with WCW. and 'old farts' weren't just wrestling in WCW. Nash and Hall were old, Sting wasn't 'old' either. The Luchadors were better than anything WWE was doing bar none. How quick a lot of the wrestlers were was insane at the time. I say, if you didn't watch Rey Mysterio in WCW..you didn't watch Rey Mysterio. I'm more than convinced you just hate everything WWE related. The Bret vs. Canada USA storyline was beautifully written. It was incredible how over he was in Canada yet so hated by USA fans. WWE didn't plan to turn him. They did it because the fans were turning on him and saw the opportunity to do something with that. It worked. The nWo storyline was an absolute shambles after they added the Giant and Ted DiBiase. You can't tell me that having 15-20 guys crammed in a ring while Hogan tells everyone how great he is is great television? I'm not going to deny that the cruiserweights were amazing because they were. Benoit, Malenko, Booker, Sting, Guerrero, Mysterio, Juvi, Psicosis, the Steiners.. all amazing during this time. However, the nWo storyline was good for initial shock value, and that's it. Overall it was a train wreck. I don't see how you can say it was all entertaining. Did you miss the Fingerpoke of Doom and nWo-B? No, it wasn't in shambles, and the wrestling world agreed as it was dominating WWE in the ratings. The fingerpoke of Doom was after I stopped watching WCW. I stopped watching somewhere around the time Goldberg lost his first match (or something) but that was FAR into the NWO storyline, and quite aways into 1998. There was 3 years of NWO storyline at that point, and it was all amazingly well done and entertaining to watch. And you might think Bret Hart vs Michaels was great, that's fine. I found it to be terrible. Bret Hart (to me) was always that ultimate good guy, so turning him heel just didn't work, it just made me (and many others mind you) turn the channel. I don't hate WWE. ( I mostly dislike everything now for the same reason i disliked it in 96) the only difference now is..there isn't a great alternative on Monday Nights. And yes..The NWO was entertaining no matter who was in it. I thought it was seemed weak when there was a Wolfpac, but even worse when there was an LWO, but that was way later as well. |

1997 WWF was awesome,
Austin's Royal Rumble win was something new, never seen that ending before have we? A guy be eliminated but win it.
USA vs Hart Foundation is a storyline that is very hard to do again. Cheered as faces in UK, Canada but booed like hell in the U.S, brilliant and fresh.
Bret & Austin's double turn at WM13 still probably the best switch ever for me.
Canadian Stampede one of top 10 WWF PPV cards ever, the main event atmosphere was electric. Austin was detested.
What about the ending of Summerslam 97, Shawn accidently nailing Taker with a chair and then having to count his arch nemesis Hart's title winning pinfall, or face being banned from WWF if he didn't act as an impartial ref?
Hell in the Cell 1 Taker vs HBK, brutal but arguably the best HIAC ever.

ok I watched both shows from 1995 all the way through to mid 99 when I dropped WCW and I dont agree with your statement completely but you have spome good points. WWF and WCW were in dreadful in 95 and 96 up until the summer.WWF had HBK as champ having excellent PPV matches at every turn and WCW had the nWo and that whole exciting new fresh storyline. Brets return in late 96 gave WWF a shot in the arm but it was clear people favored Austin(I did as a 16 year old)turning Bret was not Vinces choice-it was the peoples Austin was getting cheered and the frustrated Hitman was having temper tantrums outside the ring weekly-excellently done turn which wasnt stupid-the people decided. Austin vs The Harts lit up WWF TV weekly and WWFs edgier product provided folks with something very different.the advent of DX into the equation only further served to liven up the product and WWFs roster was coming into its own with Austin 3:16 genuinly lifting off. at the same time WCW was killer to watch... nWo was dominant and the storys were awesome.the teasing of Stings return was just so good-pity they in blew it to satisfy Hogans planetoid ego. 98:WCW made Sting into just another wrestler in a matter of Months....and made Bret Hart a mid carder.the continued to have many HUGELY popular storylines and scenarios but they were short sighted.Malone,Rodman and Leno werent going to be around forever and providing a conclusion to the nWo civil war was becoming a problem.also Sting joining Wolfpac was nearly as stupid as Austin joining the invasion.Goldberg was WHITE hot but they ruined that too. 98 WWF was a different animal though... Austin vs Mcmahon was MUST see TV every week.Tyson turned up a created buzz-but unlike WCW Tyson was used in a way which didnt hurt the undercard talent-he didnt take up match time.by 98 Vince had caught up productwise and after that there was no turning back. 99.......WCW was dreadful in places and WWF wasnt much better sometimes but Austin was still tearing the house down. in Austin WWF created a character that any Johnny normal could enjoy-that was their key to sucess.WCW ruined the greatest comback in wrestling history possibly in 3 months. I enjoyed both products so much during this time.I watched them back to back every friday night over here and didnt miss them once from April 96 onwards. and although its your opinion that WCW in this time period blew Vince away I have to disagree. |

Nitro was horrible...aside from the lack of proper storylines...things like Brad Armstrong, Steve Dunn, and public enemy doing the same table spot ever weeked killed it. And Jim Duggans taped up fist was ing stooopid |

But, I have no idea how you could think Nitro sucks. The unpredictability every week was insane! It was a crazy 2 hour Monday night ride.
Sure, WWE may have had great PPV's with great main events, but WCW was as good as any WWE PPV at the time. Every Monday was a huge event to watch, plus...Everyone in WCW WAS pretty much a main eventer in the second hour.
And as a person of the 80's, just thinking of Bret Hart in the main event just doesn't seem right. He was never 'that guy' to me, a hero of a company. He couldn't replace Hogan, EVER in the main event. In terms of who'd I would rather watch...Hulk Hogan, who was a main event superstar or Bret, who was nothing but a decent person in an okay Tag Team, that for some reason was in the main event in the mid 90's was more-so annoying than anything else.
And Austin's whole persona was a beer drinking badass...which was pretty much the entire NWO in one person.

That's true. I loved Austins character. Sadly, I didn't start watching until he was sorta fading away. Right after Wrestlemania 15. It wasn't long after that he took the year off, and wrestled only occasionally, but it was still damn entertaining.
I don't remember them siding with authority, more so running the entire show. But it's probably my memory that has sorta faded of many things during that time.

WCW didn't have many original ideas in those days. Outside of the NWO and the emergence of Bill Goldberg, most of WCW's programming from '95-'98 was confusing and uninspired.
I also disagree with DX being a copy of the NWO. The NWO was a group of Vinny Mac-built mega-stars who tried to infiltrate and destroy their rival. DX was a group of young, immature upstarts thumbing their noses at the older generation with genitalia jokes. They were completely different.
