I'm trying to get into the mythology of the Green Lantern, but so far I find his storyline to be the most confusing superhero storyline ever.
I recently bought Green Lantern: Secret Origin because I figured that would be a good place to start. What I need to know is what GL graphic novels I should get to follow up on this one. Right now I'm only interested in the Hal Jordan version of GL, I'll probably get into the other versions later on, but I figured since he is the most well known version so I'd start there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to understand the movie better? No, I just want to understand the whole story of the Green Lantern better, starting with Hal Jordan. If you want to understand GL better....I would just read Hal Jordan's Wikipedia entry. No one, two or five TPBs are going to give you that kind of knowledge. If you want to be entertained, try Blackest Night for something recent. Try First Flight for Hal's return.

I've read the wiki page, I didn't find it to be enough. I asked the manager of my local comic store and he was very helpful. He recommended reading them in this order:
Rebirth No Fear Revenge of the Green Lanterns Wanted Tales of the Sinestro Corps The Sinestro Corps War: Vol. 1 and 2 Secret Origin Rage of the Red Lanterns Agent Orange Blackest Night Brightest Day
Thank for your help, though.

That's probably the way to go, and will catch you up on the last 5 years or so of GL. The further you go back the more confusing it's going to get, speaking as someone who has read GL on and off for 30 years.

I would argue that you could totally skip Brightest Day, I mean, it has almost nothing to do with Lanterns like Hal Jordan and it's a terrible story. I really regret reading every issue and spending my money on it.

Yeah, I bought the trade for Brightest Day, and was really let down. I haven't bought part 2 yet, but even though it isn't that good, I still want to finish it. I'm stupid.

Im still trying to find Blackest Night and Brightest Day. But read DC Wikia entry on Hal. It has more than regular Wiki I just bought Blackest Night on Amazon for $16.40 on Amazon, shipping included. All I need now is Tales of the Sinestro Corps and The Sinestro Corps Wars Volumes 1 & 2.

Learning about Hal Jordan is a very time consuming task.
First thing to remember is he existed long before Geoff Johns wrote any GL stories, and as much as he wants to retcon that 40 years of history, there is just to much to deal with.
Read Secret Origin, Rebirth, Sinestro Corp. War and Darkest Night to understand the modern story, then head back and read the Showcase collections, the Emerald Dawn and emerald Twilight stories and of course the O'Neil and Adams comics.

For now I'm just sticking to the modern story. If I can though, I'll go back and check out the older stuff.

I really regret reading every issue and spending my money on it. the comic shop guy was probaly referring to the New Guardians arc that ran in GL. it carried the Brightest Day banner. that should be read, but yeah the actual series Brightest Day itself has basically nothing to do with GL and only the Aquaman parts are worth reading.

If I am correct, on DC's webpage they have a bunch of comic-like biographies of some of their characters. Thats a good start.
Oh, and just wanted to say, Kyle Rayner is the best lantern.

Kyle was the GL when I started reading so I am biased towards him. Hal was stale by the late 80's so his death in the early 90's was a godsend. Johns did a good job of making Hal interesting for a while but the story started getting so convoluted after the Sinestro Corps. War that by Blackest Knight Hal was the same stale character. I don't know if it was Hal himself or if Johns's writing became half-assed.

One thing I hate about DC is how they have multiple identities for certain heroes. I'd be perfectly fine if Hal Jordan was the only GL and Barry Allen was the only Flash.

Well, by that rationale, Green Lantern would be Alan Scott, and Flash would be Jay Garrick.
