or just slightly bigger holes in the " steel cage" for superstars to climb..
i recall in sum1's book mentioning the reason wwf changed from the Steel Cage ( muraco vs snuka ) to the big blue bars cage.. so Hogan could climb it! HAHA and guys like bossman & bundy!
my favorite blue cage memory ( minus savage & zeus promo pre SS89 ) was when i was LIVE SummerSlam 97 HHH vs Mankind
Actually it had nothing to do with Hogan. WWF felt that climbing out of the cage was more dramatic of a finish and the blue bars were much, much better for climbing. NWA was all about bloodbath cage matches, so no escape. WWF wasn't, so they changed their cage up.
The OFFICIAL reason was so that Bundy could climb the cage at WM2. He was far too heavy to escape a regular cage, so they made the reinforced blue bar cage at WM2. After that it just stuck around because it was a lot more dynamic.
In the late 90's they got rid of it because WCW was kicking their butt so bad and everyone associated WCW style cages with cage matches. Plus people were getting hurt on the big blue bar cage (black bars by that point) because of the more dynamic offense of the era. So they changed over to the WCW/NWA style cages.
Oddly enough WWE often cuts big holes in the fence to allow people to climb... Thus basically making the exact same sort of setup as the big bar cage, but with the fence.
It had nothing to do with Hogan, as he had fought in traditional cages for years. Interestingly, almost everyone from that era, wrestler-wise prefers the big bar cage. Because it was better for climbing and more dramatic in shows. Orndorff and others have went on record saying it's the much better cage.
