So you want to be a backyard wrestler? Well, heres a couple of tips for starting anew coming from me.
Starting a backyard wrestling group is easier then it sounds. All it requires is the right age, supplies, and skills to make it fun. Now that you have all that, where do you start? Obviously, with the name.
Good examples of names:
EHW
(Extreme Hardcore Wrestling)
ACW
(American Championship Wrestling)
TWL
(Texas Wrestling League)(That is if you live in Texas)
Bad examples:
SGBWOH
(Super Great Backyard Wresting of Hardcore)
I think you get the idea. Names should be short and straight to the point on what your promotion should be. Next up is the ring:
One thing you must know before making any 'ring' is this: Trampolines DO NOT count. Anything can be a ring. The ground, a tarp on the ground, tires with a tarp over it, anything really. Anything BUT a Trampoline and heres why:
1. Trampolines are more dangerous and hazardous
2. They are very unprofessional, and usually tell whether people will think your backyard wrestling is crap or not.
3. Wrestling on a trampoline is what we used to do at 7 years old. Grow up.
4. It costs much more to get a trampoline then to get an actual 'ring'.
That's all the reasons on why trampolines suck in backyard wrestling. Do not give me the excuse that you don't have the money to make a ring. You can easily make one under $50. Just remember one rule: Make sure its safe.
Wrestlers and Moves:
In my personal opinion, one of the biggest things in backyard wrestling. You will not believe how many times I've seen so called backyard wrestlers come up with these unprofessional and down right stupid moves throughout a whole match. Moves they 'create'. Please, look up real wrestling moves. Whether it be mat wrestling or pro-wrestling, it makes your backyard federation more better.
There is only one time you should come up with a move no one has ever saw. That is your signature move. Make sure your signature move is an actual wrestling move, but add your own twist to it. That's what makes a great signature move.
Finally, I want to talk about the people that do these moves, the wrestlers. Make sure the people you talk to actually want to do it. Do not force them. Also, do not turn anyone down that may be 'too fat' or 'too non-muscular'. In my opinion, being fat (not morbitaly obese) and skinny make a great roster of people. Remember this, being a body builder that can lift 500 pounds, dosen't mean he is a great wrestler nor with anyone with good looks makes them a good wrestler.
I hope some of the tips I shared help many people wanting to join or create backyard federations. I hope you do well if you want to become a backyard wrestler.
