But CM Punk is the Waffle House guy... I love how everyone says gimmicks suck but that is what is stopping guys from differentiating themselves. Cody Rhodes has a gimmick and I think he is incredible, easily one of the most entertaining guys on the roster imo. Stone Cold Steve Austin was himself but his gimmick was a take no poop redneck. I think the reason guys like Cena and Orton have gotten so boring is they have no gimmick. John Cena the rapper was awesome, Randy Orton the Legend Killer was awesome, but where is that creativity now? Everything is so bland. I'm not saying I need to see garbage men, convicts, or fake muscle suits but is it really that much to ask for guys to have a gimmick? Zack Ryder is an extension of his Long Island self. That is kind of along the lines of Austin being an extension of a redneck. Those are the types of things I like to see personally. Obviously, not everything is going to be as creative as Rhodes, but guys need to give us a reason as to why they are special. Also, Punk is awesome, but he spent two years doing a WWE version of his Straight Edge gimmick, that sort of molded into Jesus. Then he molded that into a dictator type with Nexus, and then he turned it into the anti establishment, anti hero, babyface (ala SCSA). I would say right now he is in gimmick flux because I don't think we know exactly who CM Punk is at the moment, not since MITB. At some point he will need direction again imo. Excellent post!

Yeah but guys, surely you agree that there are gimmicks and there are gimmicks; Stone Cold didn't have a gimmick really, he had a specific personality trait . The Rock didn't have a tue gimmick, it was just his promo delivery and his humor that made him stand out.
To me, other than the Undertaker rising from the dead and shooting lightning bolts, there are no gimmicks. Cody Rhodes again has a unique personality trait and wears a protective mask, it's not really a gimmick like Deuce & Domino thinking they lived in the 50s was a gimmick, or Duke Droese being a garbage man who also wrestles [like, just for the lols].
I prefer it this way. Cena has a 'gimmick' in the sense that he has his own personality, but the reason people find him boring is that it doesn't reach out that well to the older demographic. Likewise, people saying Randy Orton has no gimmick, unlike when he was the 'Legend Killer'... seriously, what? Nowadays he is unstable, remorseless, has fits of rage and punts people in the head. It's not like he's the same as everyone else on the roster.
Basically, in modern day, WWE gimmicks are personality traits for the most part, not silly attires and people pretending they are hockey players while wrestling is their second occupation [That'd be The Goon for those who are confused].

pretty much. I hate how everyone says Cena has no gimmick like anyone else does. Everyone wears plain trunks and is just normal guys now. I would rather them have normal person gimmicks over retards, robots, boogeymen, pirates, and any other gimmick that was no more than a midcard comedy act I wouldn't. In my opinion, over the top gimmicks like Taker, Warrior are really interesting and entertaining.

Yes but besides those two, who has made a big main event name for themselves out of all of the outrageous gimmicks?

Is there some rule out there that says a wrestler is supposed to have a gimmick?

He rapped a promo at the rock before mania think that's the last time he rapped. Didn't he rap once during him and Punk's feud, I'm not sure but it was probably around the time Punk said he was just like the Yankees

Someone who speaks sense. Until this post I was literally open mouthed wondering if anyone actually knew what a gimmick was... Punk, no gimmick? Austin, no gimmick? Are you serious guys? ;D

Nothing at all. I never got that crap either.

Rap outfit? He wears a tshirt and shorts... He hasn't worn a chain or any "bling" for about 6 years. He hasn't worn any oversized clothing for about the same time either, besides shorts. Which I imagine were just comfortable to wear for performing.. Idk wtf you see when he's on tv but he doesn't appear to me the same as he did when he rapped.

Certainly not 18 or the twenties. However, seeing someone who is approaching middle age (Cena isn't quite there, but 34 isn't young) wearing the same stuff that they might have worn in high school seems like they are desperate for years gone by. Cena's character seems like that certain type of guy we all know who fights to speak, look, act, exist exactly the way he did in high school. You know the kind of guy who still wears his letter jacket and is still gossiping about everyone from high school despite having graduated 15 years ago? There isn't anything wrong with it, of course, but it comes off as a little pathetic.

Why does everyone care what someone wears so much? I guess Cena should stock up on khakis, button up shirts, and sweater vests since he's such an old fart.

Put him in trunks, ya know, so that he looks as original as pretty mucy everyone else on the roster.

What a character/persona wears is a very large part of who they are. The topic of this thread is about Cena "losing" his gimmick. I don't think he's lost it at all, because he still has the hip-hop dress, hand gestures, and catch phrases, albeit not quite as edgy as his heel days. That's a large part of the reason that the adult crowd doesn't relate well to Cena. At 18, a Cena-like character might seem hip. At 30 or 35, Cena probably reminds you of a phase you might remember fondly (or wince at it) but you grew out of it as you grew up. Adults would relate to a strict Marine version of Cena much better than any type of character related to a musical genre.
