I just watched Superbrawl VIII last night where Sting finally actually won the title from Hogan. And that was yet another sloppy and weird ending, after Sting was beat down 90% of the match.

Truly awful.....underlined that Sting couldn't beat Hogan without help. Whats worse is people rant & rave about Hogan being a hog for the limelight......Savage was just as bad.

Hogan and Savage were the 2 true power players behind the scenes in WCW...least til Hall and Nash came along.

yeah the crew popped out to 4 then......
It still annoys me that Sting was sidelined for the nWo split and Hogan vs Savage V3.

WCW's mishandling of Sting, arguably the hottest star in wrestling at the time, is almost certainly the biggest reason the company isn't still around today. The other reasons are fascinating and fun to debate, but maybe they don't belong in this thread.
What I would like to add, however, is that the Starrcade 1997 main event should have been about 5 minutes long, and it should have been Sting beating the holy hell out of Hogan before submitting him in the middle of the ring with the Scorpion Deathlock. I'm the biggest Hulk Hogan fan in the world (well, at least through the end of his 2003 run) and I will absolutely admit that his ego prevented WCW from surviving the Monday Night Wars.
(Note: "Surviving," not winning. Part of WCW's problem is that they could have been the #2 company in the world if they just would have ridden Goldberg harder as their champion and moved on from the lame NWO formula. Watch mid-1999 WCW before Russo: large, hot crowds almost everywhere, with babyface Hogan as champion... no reason the company couldn't have stayed with that formula and been a rock-solid #2 to WWF for another decade or more.)

I agree that it wasn't over yet in 1999.....they still could have turned a corner. they had Sting, Hart, Goldberg, Nash, Steiner & Revolution just for starters.....but they kept screwing the pooch. Goldberg NEVER got his revenge for Jan 4th 1999/Starrcade.....Hogan turned face and feuded with Flair instead. NOBODY wanted that. His creative control was VERY damaging to the product.

Agreed. I thought Hogan turning babyface again was a good idea, but he and the rest of the nWo should have gotten mauled by Goldberg and Sting first.

Why is this stickied even though I love sting and agree with the missuse So many people hung up on why this is stickied.......I will go over it again. It comes up ALL the time. Evidenced by the activity in this thread alone. its absolutely one of THE most talked about things in the Classic Board since before I was Mod and defo after. secondly I was asked by frequent contributors to Classic to sticky it because my original post struck a chord with many.

Ugh Yeah.....when you look back at 1998 now? You can see where its all going wrong. I was hooked at the time but could see by mid year that things were getting stale as hell.

it was clearly obvious they had no direction at that point in 1998,or at least no long-term storylines/direction. hell, Goldberg's title win was pretty much a last-minute change (only a week before it was to be a dark match, with Goldberg winning by DQ) just to try and do SOMETHING to get momentum back on their side. and several former WCW wrestlers talked about how they'd have the night's plans/match and promo schedule up on a board in the back, only for Nash,Hogan, and/or Bischoff to come in and change everything around before the show went on the air, sometimes just 10 minutes before the camera's were rolling!
WCW had ALL the momentum on their side going into Starrcade 1997. the WWF was reeling from a year and a half of being #2 and losing in the ratings, the black eye of the Montreal Screwjob hung over Vince and should've benefited WCW with Bret Hart coming in,and WCW had a main event that every wrestling fan wanted to see. and they blew it. they blew it all.

I'm gonna add to this that hogan and anybody else with "creative rights" are just as bad as Russo. I mean they were going around changing scripts and ruining the product. This comes after watching the nwo documentary on wwe network

One guy that gets off the hook all the time is Randy Savage......in early 1998 Savage with his pal Hogan made WCW all about them again....and sidelined Stings title reign in favour of the "strife with nWo" stuff. Savage should have been putting Sting over in high profile match's on PPV NOT beating him to further the nWo storyline.

Nwo should have been- hogan, nash, hall, Steiner, bischoff and I'm actually ok with fake sting but when Giant joins, savage, Luger, sting join it's just overkill. Heck Russo probably even thought goldberg should join at one point. Add in hogan and savages ego plus Russo and wcw dies

But I didn't like him being featured above Sting in 1998. As I said.....Savage should have been Stings 1st successful title defence. And he should have been NOWHERE near helping Sting beat Hogan

Yeah, that superbrawl finish was horrible and very horribly done. Then facing hogan in the cage just to end with hitting sting and turning on hogan just horrible.

So I just read this for the first time. I always remember the Starrcade debacle, but I had no idea it got so bad in 1998. Sting vs. the NWO was the biggest thing going and had so much buildup...for nothing.
