As a child I dabbled here and there in the comic world, but never gave it any more thought than just a random magazine that I would just browse through. I'd read it and not care about the next issue.
As I've grown up I seen some of my friends have some killer comic collections and just recently I been reading a few of them and been getting into all the super hero aspects of things. My problem is, I didn't even know where to start. They have XMEN, World of XMEN, Wolverine and the XMEN, 20 different Spidermans, Venoms, and my favorite but not quite popular, Carnage.
So, after reading a few articles, I came across something that REALLY sparked my interest... Avengers vs. XMEN.
I was like, "Now that sounds bad ass!" And seeing that it's JUST starting, I can catch it. I ended up ordering the Phoenix edition and regular edition for #0 and 1 Special Edition #1 and a regular one. From here on out I'll just get the regular editions, but the #0 and #1 I'm hoping will become a collectors item one day.
I put my advanced order in for issue #2, and now I'm pumped waiting for my #0 and #1 to come in the mail.
Anyone else here collect comics that could possibly give me some tips on collecting, or a good series to enthrall myself in? Any help would be appreciated.

I point you to our Comic Discussion Board
I used to read them, every now and again I will pick up the odd graphic novel, still something I enjoy a great deal.

I read, but don't collect. I have 300 GB or so of digital back issues though.

I've been in the same boat as you, trying to start up again. The way I see it is stick with what you know you will want to read. As you said, the variations of books these days can cause a killer hole in your wallet. I liked it back in the day when there was one or two GI Joe series instead of 6. The X-World is something I am very partial to as I grew up on them. Trying to figure out what I want to read is another thing. I've been out of the comic loop for too long to go back and read everything I want to, so my strategy has been to grab a full set of one thing or a huge story arc of another. It has worked so far. If you want to dabble into a new series I suggest grabbing a trade paper back(tpb) to just kinda get a feel if it is something that you would be interested in. I recently grabbed one thing that I absolutely could nto get into so I was glad that I only spent $10 on a tpb rather than grabbing a large portion of the series on the net. Another good thing to do is research. I was looking into two Batman stories, No Man's Land and Knightfall. If I didn't do good research I wouldn't have realized that new tpbs were coming out with a more complete story than what was previously published. This makes me feel like a kid again. But instead of being a poor kid, I am an adult with expendable income ;D As far as suggestions, I dont know how long you have been out of the loop but the Ultimate Spiderman series was pretty stellar. X-men Schism is relatively new and gotten a decent amount of praise. The Uncanny X-Force series has been great so far. I know you only mentioned Marvel series but DC has relaunched all of their series not too long ago(6-7 issues in I believe), so if you were interested in something DC it would be a great place to jump in.

Thank you so much for your input and recommendations. I ended up ordering some Wolverine and the XMEN comics, as well as Batman: The Dark Night and New Avengers to plunge into. We'll see how these series go and maybe, quite possibly, I'll get into them as well. Again, many thanks! +1

I'm in the middle of reading No Man's Land at the moment. The TPBs only cover a handful of the stories in the arc I think. There are like 80-90 comics in the whole thing.

I'm in the middle of reading No Man's Land at the moment. The TPBs only cover a handful of the stories in the arc I think. There are like 80-90 comics in the whole thing. There was the Cataclysm story which ran through the whole bat-family of books, followed by Road to No Man's Land which was short, and un-collected in a TPB. There are the 5 volumes of NML, which collect very little of what goes on. I have read all of the issues with the NML banner and honestly many of them don't add much to the story. The missing issues work to better build up what has happened to Gotham, the people of Arkham and the despair felt by Batman but all together like The Blackest Night, there are just to many issues. I am visiting my family this weekend and hope to dig out my X-Men comics but I fear it will just end with me getting back into that mess. Best thing to do is find a comic franchise you really truly enjoy and just dive into it. Ask questions about some event or story if you think it sounds like something you don't want to read. After a while you will develop a nose for finding comics you like.

I got the #0 and #1 coming to me within the week and already advanced ordered #2. I'm pumped for this series.

I'm pumped for this series. Comics in the past decade have become so varied and have crossed so many genre lines, as simple as it sounds, yes. Dabble and find the kind of story-telling you like, the tone and art style you like best and the characters you like most. Remember a character or book you like today may have sucked in the past and suck tomorrow so learn to be flexible.
