Yeah, I understand it's not a move that 6 months from now the Yankees will be sitting there going "letting that Aardsma guy go is the reason we didn't make the Playoffs".....but I just was looking forward to seeing what he had.
I just don't see what it was an either/or situation. Why did Aardsma have to be cut in order to carry Kelley? I assume the Yankees will carry 12 pitchers to open the season.
1. CC Sabathia
2. Hiroki Kuroda
3. Andy Pettitte
4. Ivan Nova
5. David Phelps
6. Mariano Rivera
7. David Robertson
8. Joba Chamberlain
9. Boone Logan
10. Shawn Kelley
11. Cody Eppley (not sure why he's on, has been awful and has options)
12. ?
If the last two spots are for Warren and Eppley, I'm pretty sure Aardsma would have been a better option than either of them. If Girardi wants Kelley and Warren just to have 2 long men this early in the season when the pitching usually sucks in the cold weather, then Aardsma still should have gotten a spot over Eppley.
Plus, like we talked about, Hughes won't miss more than 2 starts, and hypothetically Pineda and Wang will be available soon.
As of right now, I'm guessing the 25 man roster is going to look like this:
Starting Rotation:
1. CC Sabathia - LHP
2. Hiroki Kuroda - RHP
3. Andy Pettitte - LHP
4. Ivan Nova - RHP
5. David Phelps - RHP
Starters by position:
6. Lyle Overbay - 1B
7. Robinson Cano - 2B
8. Eduardo Nunez - SS
9. Kevin Youkilis - 3B
10. Francisco Cervelli - C
11. Ichiro - RF
12. Brett Gardner - CF
13. Vernon Wells - LF
14. Travis Hafner - DH
Bullpen:
15. Adam Warren
16. Shawn Kelley
17. Cody Eppley
18. Boone Logan - Lefty Specialist
19. Joba Chamberlain - 7th
20. David Robertson - Setup Man (8th)
21. Mariano Rivera - Closer (9th)
Bench:
22. Chris Stewart - C
23. Jayson Nix - IF
24. Ben Franciso - OF
25. Brennan Boesch - OF
I guess this is the best they're going to be able to do until Jeter, Granderson, Pineda and Hughes come back, and IF Teixeira and A-Rod actually can play this year.
