Swinging at the first pitch was dumb, especially off of Rodney, but he would've had a hard hit single right through the middle if not for ANOTHER Maddon shift.
Never seen a manager implement the shift on multiple players. Cano, A-Rod, Teixeira, Granderson...hell, I think he did some sort of major shift against every Yankee hitter.
Frustrating indeed.

Well, that got way too close. lol. But I'll take it. It'd be nice to get the sweep tomorrow but I'll take a series win.
Price struggled at times but overall looked good, the bullpen struggled but up against a great offense I'm not surprised. The Rays offense looks great thus far.

Leave baserunners on... you don't win games....
It's pretty simple.

Joe Maddon is such a hippster that he implements a shift on the entire lineup.

Yanks do this every April.....I'm actually not worried. Joe Maddon is either a genius or the Yankees are just too damn predictable, because Maddon's defensive alignments are awesome and he seems to know EXACTLY where every Yankee hitter is going to hit the ball.

I think Maddon and his coaches did an incredible job of scouting the Yankees lineup. Yanks gotta adjust to the shifts and not let it get into their heads.

I think Maddon and his coaches did an incredible job of scouting the Yankees lineup. Yanks gotta adjust to the shifts and not let it get into their heads. The Yankees get plenty of base runners....but they have no balls. Girardi doesn't take chances. The Yankees don't steal. The Yankees don't bunt. The Yankees don't hit and run. Hell, the Yankees don't even attempt to hit the ball the other way. If Joe Maddon is going to shift on EVERY player, that's fine, it prevents the Yankees from pulling the ball and sometimes prevents them from going up the middle. BUT it always leaves a GAPING HOLE somewhere in the infield which the Yankees NEVER EVEN ATTEMPT TO AIM FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But hey, like you said, Joe Maddon and his staff did a great job. The Yankee hitters are old, stubborn and predictable and REFUSE to do anything other than pull the ball most of the time. And the Yankees hitters react COMPLETELY different with the bases empty and with runners on. With the bases empty, they are very patient and have great eyes, have great at bats and take a lot of pitches. With runners on base....they swing at the first pitch and make VERY quick outs.

I'm not a big fan of bunting. Giving away free outs doesn't sit well with me, especially with a lineup that's loaded with power hitters and players who generally make good contact with the baseball.
It's super duper early but I'm with you on more hit and run attempts. Only seem to run when the count is 3-2.
Say no to bunting but hit and runs wouldn't hurt.

I don't like to give away outs either.....but a guy like Gardner can bunt for hits. But oh wait, he wasn't playing today because on the second game of the season Girardi is already playing righty/lefty and resting Derek Jeter for some reason. Gardner needs to play everyday. His speed and base running alone make him a dangerous weapon against right handed and left handed pitching. Eduardo Nunez should be traded to another team where he can be a starting player. He's shown over the years that he can not be a bench player. He's an AWESOME everyday player when Jeter and A-Rod are on the DL, but try and use him once or twice a week and he's an error machine. He needs to play everyday or he's pretty useless.

I agree with resting Jeter and A-Rod as much as possible. They need them as healthy as can later in the season.
No problem with benching Gardy. That's why Jones is on this team, to hit left handed pitching. He missed a home run by a few feet.

Not sure why the analysts were all saying Fielder's home run numbers would go down in Comerica. It's not really a bad hitter's park. Only bad part is the deep center field, otherwise the park is fine. I fully expect him to hit at least 40 jacks this year.

Does Jeter really need to rest? He's over analyzing stupid crap. Gardner is an everyday player, and besides Granderson, he's the only guy on that team with any speed at all. He's a great defensive player, and he's a pretty solid hitter. The lefty/righty stuff needs to stop. We're not dealing with the Granderson of two years ago who couldn't hit a lefty to save his life, we are talking about pro ball players who can hit regardless of what side a pitcher is throwing from.

Hardly the case. He hits lefties very well. Brett Gardner against LHP in 2011: .233/.344/.272 Andruw Jones against LHP in 2011: .286/.384/.540
