I've decided both comic company's are in a mess. Marvel has completely rewrote every characters story three to four times with three to four different confusing parody's. DC has no idea what to do with one character and thus the rest suffer the same fate once a main character is tossed into a loop of wild stories.
I think for the casual reader, read anything from 1970-1991 from both company's. Anything after gets quite confusing specially the X-men 90's comics.

Sadly, I actually thought DC was in pretty decent shape before the reboot. Well, Brightest Day and Flashpoint were kind of crappy. But up to that, things were pretty good, to me at least. Now the only thing that isn't completely jacked up is Batman.

I'm interested in seeing a reboot of both company's but I want all of the character stories to go back to the original origins. I wouldn't mind a minor tweak here and there but nothing like it is now. I'm curious to see how this civil union marriage in X-men will go down once it's released. I want the comic just simply because I believe it truly is a historic issue and will hold a small value after time.

I doubt any modern comics are going to be worth anything, at least until right before print dies completely and the comics have extremely limited runs.
