So this past week, I finally came to the startling realization that I have comics everywhere in my goddamn house. It shouldn't be a surprise - I'll be 27 next month, and I've been buying comics, increasingly on the reg, since I was in high school (that's 9 years that I've been out, kids). In an effort to facilitate the ol' "happy wife, happy life" ideal, make our imminent move next year easier, and make my collection more enjoyable and shareable with others, I decided to undertake the organization effort. Here is what I've discovered about a decade + worth of collecting:
- When you're as disorganized as I am, comics go missing. I have a growing list of comics to find/rebuy. - I've also amassed a small country's worth of #1's that I never followed up on. These will likely be fodder for the next local comic show, at which I'll rent a table an try to unload everything I have no use for. - The bulk of my collection (all Avengers related titles and all Ultimate titles) took me three days to locate, sort, and file. The "X" books and solo runs are going to be a breeze. - I now understand the hatred of renumbering, especially after sorting through Ultimate Spider-Man.
Anyone else as disorganized as me, or have you filed since day 1? How big are your collections? Is this going to end with a self inflicted bullet jammed into my brain?

I used to drive myself crazy when I had a physical collection. I had them separated by publisher, and the titles all in alphabetical order in longboxes.
For this reason, I am very glad to have gone completely digital with comics.

I'll never go to that depth - generality is my game here. As it stands, most of my collection is literally stuffed into several longboxes, bins, and bags, tossed in after one or two initial reads, meaning there is no organizational structure. That's why I've taken to choosing one set at a time (say, Ultimate titles), finding them, pulling them, sorting them, and filing them. That way, they go in some relative grouping, but I could never do ABC's and 123's.

I have two boxes of comics I keep for different reasons but I went to digital and have no issues keep track of anything. My fiance however likes TPB so we have a bookcase full of those to deal with now.

a year or two ago, and for four years before that, i was spending upwards of $60 a week on comics. gotta love having a great paying job. then the job ended, and so did the comics.
i still buy maybe two a month, but compared to the 15+ books i was getting a month before, i've essentially lost the passion towards it. i've recently had some time off work so i'm starting to read again.
i sold off a huge chunk of my collections a couple years ago. i had complete runs (with maybe a few issue exceptions) of a lot of original marvel titles. i'd say i'm currently easily sitting on 5000-8000 comics, not including trades.
i recently found a local flea/farmers market that has one dude as a vendor that has got to have 5000 comics, all dating back to the bronze age. i almost want to bring my price guide in there with me and start searchin.

Price guides are about worthless nowadays. I remember when any 1960's Marvel comic was an automatic $20 so long as the pages were all there, the spine was flat and the cover was attached. In the past month I have seen dozens of prime comics from the early 60's sell for $5 each and seen many first appearance issues sell for nothing. Hell, I saw a Giant Sized X-Men #1 sell for $125. I wish I had the chance to get to that first.

I did Captain America and all related titles today.
- Cap is the only book I've managed to, in my sloppiness, maintain a full run of without coming across any "missing" issues. - After a crisis of not knowing, and observing the sheer amount of titles I have relative to Cap and his run, I can honestly say that he's probably my favorite superhero. - Truth: Red, White, & Black is a real solid story, but would have benefited from a better artist, and would probably be more well known, but if you're a fan of the Young Avengers and you don't have this run, you're only hurting yourself. - Red Skull, conversely, is probably my favorite villain. - At what point does it become acceptable to start kicking down Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's respective doors and demand the completion of "Captain America: White"? I'm almost tired of sitting on nothing more than my copy of issue #0.

This is how I organize my comics these days. Broken down by publisher, then character, then series title, then any runs (like series 1, series 2, etc...) then any annuals. I've got like 400 gb worth.

I couldn't go digital. Not with my comics. Reading e-books weirds me out enough.

I couldn't go digital. Not with my comics. Reading e-books weirds me out enough. I went digital and have it set up so I can sync everything with my Galaxy Tab. I have over 1000 comic books at my fingertips. I read before I pass out at night. I read when I wake up in the morning. It's awesome. I wouldn't go back to physical for anything.

I'm the same way with my iPad. They look amazing on the screen, and the ability to carry hundreds of comics with me at a time, and read them in a business environment without worrying about judgement is fantastic.

i read comics both digitally and traditionally, and i must admit, traditional style blows it away in my opinion. years of conditioning of turning those pages, the feel, the art style or type of paper depending on the era or company, the thrill in the random find. i love these things just as much as the stories themselves. as for captain america (or even more so the red skull), this still a brilliant issue in it's portrayal of the red skull, and overall an all-time favorite single issue: red skull evading the obsessed magneto, who before agreeing to ally himself with skull wants his explanations (or admittance) for his involvement in the nazi party. the whole issue is based on skull conveniently escaping magneto, until the end where magneto leaves skull in a pitch dark basement with just water.

I actually enjoyed the Acts of Vengeance storyline though I wish it went further.

I like to collect the physical issue but I think I would like reading digital better. I think I worry about ruinin the pages or the book to much.

The past two days were dedicated to Spidey and X-Titles.
- Nobody really likes these books. Nobody. They just buy them to torment themselves over sorting processes when storylines needlessly cross over into eight different related titles, a la "One More Day" and "Second Coming".
That's all. SYE has been replaced by a creature of pure, motorized hate instinct.

Can anyone care to explain how they can catalog their ENTIRE collection to digital form?
Or do you have to 'rebuy' the issue?
I know that some of the current comics I'm subscribed to like Ultimate Spider-Man states that a digital copy is included but what about older issues?
Thanks.
And I am extremely obsessed and need everything organized so renumbering has killed me on titles like The Incredible Hulk.
