Hey, I wish this could be something happy, but unfortunately, it isn't. 18 years ago today, long-time WWF Referee Joey Marella was tragically killed in an automobile accident when he fell asleep at the wheel. He was only 31 years old... Unquestionably, Joey Marella has had some classic moments in his refereeing career, like being the referee for the main event at WrestleMania III between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant: He also had a bit part in Hulk Hogan's movie No Holds Barred when he was the referee for the match between Rip and Jake Bullet: He was also known for being the son of Gorilla Monsoon, although I don't believe it was ever officially aknowledged on WWF television. Here's the tribute picture and article from an old WWF Magazine: And here's the tribute video: I wish I could've met him while he was here, although I did see him referee live at WrestleMania VI in Toronto and I suppose that's definitely better than nothing at all. He was a great referee and he is still greatly missed.... R.I.P. Joey Marella

I think I remember reading in Bret Hart's book that Joey Marella was his favorite referee or something.

It's 18 years ago, but anyway that isn't the point. R.I.P. Joey Marella.

R.I.P. Joey. Did Gorilla ever make reference to his passing at the time on television at all?

I sincerely hope he is in a better place, he did referee some classics and was as recognisable as Earl Hebner back in the day.

It is nice that WWE decided to honor him by having Santino use his name.

Very sad, especially to have died so young. Son of another legend who died very young. RIP Joey and Gorilla.

I use to always die laughing when Ventura or Heenan would bad mouth Marella about how bad of a ref he was and how big of a buffoon he was and Monsoon just had to sit there and take it. You know it was straight ribs against him.

Very sad. RIP. I'm glad his son has gone on to do great things in the WWE though.

R.I.P. Joey. Did Gorilla ever make reference to his passing at the time on television at all? I don't believe so. They didn't even mention it in the tribute video. Don't know why they felt the need to keep it such a big secret...

I was sitting at the bar in the old New Haven Coliseum before a show and referee Joey Marella came in and walked to the bar. I was about 6 or 7 and he said hi to us after we recognized him and chatted with us for a bit. Don't ask what I was doing in a bar at that age. Really nice guy this was in 1990 or 1991. RIP Joey.
