So I'm looking to get into owning some graphic novels and would really like to know some opinions on what is best out there.
Anyone have some tips so I can start off a hopefully long and awesome collection?

If you're going to start with anything I would say Y: The Last Man, it was one of the first full series I read and is one of my all time favorites.

Ha, sorry, i wrote a much longer comment but trimmed it down (was along the lines of whether he wanted standalone graphic novels or ones set within a specific continuity) Looks like i didn't remove all the text i wanted to Basically, check out Batman: Hush (then Heart of Hush) and Iron Man: Demon In A Bottle

No Sandman in this thread!? for shame. some other titles I think deserve the mention - Preacher - The Boys - Nemesis - Joker (Azzarello)

Kick Ass wasnt mentioned so I thought I should. Even Alex liked that one Dallas, and you know how he is.

Like i said i butchered my previous comment, maybe i dragged that standalone thing over by accident... Anyway, does it really matter? I get defensive about the notion. There's still this weird stigma, that stems out of people discovering the characters via the movies, attached to reading "comics". People, for some reason, shudder over the word, and hide in it by saying "If you liked the movie, you should read the 'graphic novels'". As a die hard, weekly Wednesday warrior comic book fan, it's kind of cringe inducing to see the medium get so many new followers who are afraid to just throw caution to the wind and embrace it. Azzarello's "Joker", "The Killing Joke", and such, I can see, but everything else, even the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale Batman stories, are nothing more than collections of comic books that were previously released individually.

I just bought Batman Earth one, i bought it thinking its a re-telling of Batmans origin on the current ongoing batman but i find out from someone on a forum its a different Batman...this is what confuses new readers.

I don't know how you could confuse it. It's not stated anywhere on the book that it has any ties to the current Batman title. It's not written by Scott Snyder. It's distinguished right in the title that it takes place in its own universe. It'd be like buying Ultimate anything by Marvel and wondering why Spider-Man is a thirteen year old minority figure, or why half the universe is dead.
