Michael Fassbender - Shame Christian Bale - The Machinist (although I REALLY liked him in Harsh Times) Denzel Washington - Tied between Man on Fire and Training Day Leonardo DiCaprio - Inception Robert De Niro - Casino The amount of weight he lost for that film is truly a feat. He was disgustingly skinny. Definitely a good choice for him, he was great in that film.

Parchandri-EXCELLENT TOPIC!!! Since it says actor, I guess it's male performances only and I'll list two performances. The first one I list is the one I like the best of that actor. I think we should also make a topic for actresses. That'd be a fun one to do as well. I'll make it if you don't want.
Leonardo DiCaprio- Frank Abagnale, Jr.- Catch Me If You Can Teddy Daniels- Shutter Island
Daniel Day-Lewis- Bill "The Butcher" Cutting- Gangs of New York-this is actually my all time favorite movie. I love the Five Points era of New York City and DDL and DiCaprio are my two favorite actors. Daniel Plainview- There Will Be Blood- Perfect Can't wait to see him in Lincoln. Could be another Oscar. DiCaprio could also get a Best Supporting Oscar for Django Unchained as well. I am hoping to see that.
Edward Norton- Derek Vinyard- American History X- possibly my favorite performance of all time in a movie to be honest. The Narrator- Fight Club
Christian Bale- Patrick Bateman- American Psycho *Professor Rothman- I think that this is easily one of the best performances I've seen myself. Bruce Wayne/Batman- The Dark Knight Trilogy
Al Pacino- Tony Montana- Scarface Michael Corleone- The Godfather Part 1
Kevin Spacey- Lester Burnham- American Beauty Verbal Kint- The Usual Suspects
Tom Hanks- Forrest Gump- Forrest Gump Paul Edgecombe- The Green Mile
Robert DeNiro- Neil McCauley- Heat Sam "Aces" Rothstein- Casino
Johnny Depp- John Dillinger- Public Enemies Sweeney Todd- Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Nicolas Cage- Ben Sanderson- Leaving Las Vegas Castor Troy- Face/Off
Christoph Waltz- Col. Hans Landa- Inglourious Basterds August- Water for Elephants- I thought the portrayal of this character by Waltz was executed perfectly.
Though he is not one of my favorite actors, one performance that I must list that I absolutely love is Rainn Wilson's Frank Darrbo/The Crimson Bolt in Super.

Nice list. I debated whether or not on putting Kevin Spacey on my list, and I actually would have chose the same role for him. He was fantastic in American Beauty. One of those roles that no other actor would have fit the character better.
Also, if you want to start one up for actresses feel free! That would be a good topic as well.

A couple others: Ryan Gosling in Sexy Politics and Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski (in what might be the single most convincing acting performance ever).
