MMAFighting.com just confirmed it.
Yes, you read that headline correctly. No, we're not trolling you.
Lyoto Machida has opted to turn down a title shot against Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones at UFC 152 on Sept. 22, 2012, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. So former 205-pound champ Vitor Belfort has agreed to step in and fill the void.
That's according to MMAFighting.com, who brought word of the news just a short time ago.
More on this breaking news in just a bit.

Rumor has it that Shogun turned the shot down as well.
Ariel Helwani says, "Don't sleep on me yet. Got one more HOLY CRAP story before the night is out."

Anderson Silva offered to fight at 151 against a LHW.
Dana confirmed it.

Wow, how crazy is this? Unreal.
Jones/Sonnen: Jones declines Jones/Machida: Machida declines Jones/Shogun: Shogun declines
And the fight we get is Jones vs. Belfort. At least Belfort fought at 205 before, was training for a fight(in October against Belcher if I remember right) and is someone who Jones hasn't demolished. Interesting fight. The "Belfort Blitz" is always an issue, but I see Jones wrestling Belfort to the ground and smashing him to a TKO ala Randy(just a little more violently)

not that i have a problem with this... but what happened to sonnen? why not reward him and give him jones in 3 weeks. unless jones just said outright he wouldnt fight sonnen.
i used to love jones, when he was on the come up. but more and more im losing him a little... i hope belfort knocks him out, as implausible as that may seem.

While I applaud his fighting spirit, Sonnen just lost a title fight at 185. He shouldn't be "rewarded" with anything. I mention it earlier. This is the sort of clusterf**k you run in to when top tier fighters start turning down fights.

perhaps rewarded was the wrong term... but the fact that sonnen was willing to throw his name in to save the card, 8 days from the card itself, shouldve been commended. its not like vitors last two wins [rumble, a guy whos gone, and akiyama, a guy whos probably one more loss away from being gone], were any better than sonnens last two losses [taking it to the best fighter in the world].
in any case, ive heard chris weidman also offered to step in at 205 and fight jones too.

Its funny, all 185'ers stepped up to fight. 205'ers denied.

I never want to hear about these "elite level fighters" at 205 again.

And what anyone ever says about him again. Vitor gets 1,000,000x more respect than he ever did now that he has the balls to step up a weight class and fight the #1 (or #2) P4P fighter out there. I know Chael offered, but we all knew he was headed to 205 after the Silva loss. Vitor's next fight was at 185, so I think he deserves props here.

Vitor comes from the old school of mma fighters where guys sometimes fought 2 times a night against top opponents. 30 days notice is pretty much nothing to him.

Vitor wins. I know the odds are something crazy in Jones favor and its understandable but this is Vitors fight to win. Vitor brings hands like Jones hasnt seen before. Alot of power, great speed, and one powerful splits that could put Jones to sleep. Its on short notice and belfort has nothing to lose and Bones Jones has it all to lose. Really wanted the Hendo fight...really wanted the chael fight....but this works. Will this not be called UFC 151?

I love Vitor, but he's got little to no chance in beating Jones. Vitor has never fought the type of reach and skill Jones has. He'll get taken down easily, and elbowed to death.
