So, Pro Wrestling Torch has started this column where they compare the different figures made of any given wrestler over the years. It's pretty interesting, and though I make no claim to have every figure of every wrestler, I thought I might start doing this from time to time as well. So here is my first crack at it.
Ladies and Gentlemen...from the Fiji Islands...Superfly Jimmy Snuka!!
As one of the few wrestlers that has never seemed to piss of Vinnie Mac there have been a number of versions of Jimmy produced over the years from many different companies. The oldest one I have is his LJN figure, which isn't the greatest likeness, but it's an alright figure...other than the disturbingly tiny tights they gave him.
Next up, his Hasbro figure. I like that this one is doing his trademark hand gesture, and that it made the Superfly Splash look so epic off the top rope, but the figure was lame for doing anything else, and those Habro's with the feet stuck together were always more than a little lame. It is the one figure that captured Jimmy's "Crazy Eyed Look" better than any other.
Jakks made a decent Superfly as well, continuing in the tradition of giving us bare foot Jimmy. It was an interesting figure in that from certain angles it really looked a LOT like him and from others, not at all. A great addition to any Classics collection. By this point I would have liked to see a Wrestlemania 1 Main Event attire, but no bid deal...that's what Customs are for.
Finally we have Mattel's Superfly. I wasn't really too impressed with this one when I first picked it up, but wanted to complete the Legends line he came with so I grabbed him. It has grown on me over the years. He so often went of with his "Whoo Whoo Whoo"ing over the years, (seriously, you should Youtube some of his interviews...he is right up there with the Ultimate Warrior in that sense) and this figure captured that and all the other rambling non-sense he did over the years pretty well. It also came with a nice jacket, and even though at first I was not impressed with the long tights and boots, he did wear this look for a while in his later years, and it made for a unique addition to the collection of Superfly figures that had come out over the years, although giving him a goatee would have made the look just that much more special.
So there you have it...gotta love the Superfly Bruddah!!
