Most of the people who use the word 'overrated' for wrestlers in the past are probably using todays wrestling as a example to compare them to on the scale of 'greatness'. These guys are from an era where the crowd pops over a scoop slam and was that was considered a powerful move at the time. It's like comparing a 1966 fastback mustang to cars today in terms of modern technology and build quality. You just can't. If you were around of their peak, you'd probably see it but you can't go on YouTube and watch some matches and base your opinion off that.

But in everything today. That being said, Flair is still one og the greatest up there for everything. Hes easily in my top 4.

I like Flair, i hope im not coming across as hating on the guy but other than getting gushers every night and being extremely repetitive i struggled to be entertained by the guy in terms of his wrestling. Its like Dusty Rhodes as well, people praise him and i never understood why. All i ever seen was a pile of flabby skin, sweat and a huge brown birth mark on his belly. Its like the american dream joke, you have to be asleep to believe it. Dusty Rhodes is a poet o promos & could wrestle 60 minute matches like a msn half his size. He spoke to a melting pot of fans & could hang with the best his era had to offer which was a HELL of a roster! Race, Funks, Briscos, Flair etc. Most of you have been spoiled by the "instant gratification." mentality of modern society. NO appreciation for a methodical, hard fought, gritty wrestling match. Argue about flair as much as you want, but you leave the voice of the 70s & 80s out of this. He's talked circles around EVERYONE in the current wwe locker room. Including Punk, Kane, Big Show, Orton, etc. Go watch "True Grit". It's a prime example of his prose. You get over however you can & do your best to back it up "Bell to bell" & Dusty damn sure backed it up. Watch ANY match he had over 20 minutes. The majority are highly entertaining. Also Flair had an immense pain tolerance, lovable arrogance, ring savvy, world class conditioning & an unwavering desire & loyalty to wrestling to the point it actually took away from his career to a serious extent(His last WWF title reign onward). That's what made him great.

I'm gonna be honest here...
I agree. I find Ric Flair to be incredibly overrated. Most overrated of all time? I dunno. I would certainly out him towards the top of MY list.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that he's the most over rated wrestler ever. Especially in his own mind. I can't think of anyone else who is praised as highly as Flair is, for being as bad as he was in the ring. Not even Hogan, the majority of fans now "hate" Hogan.

He used to be my favorite of all time, but he has moved down on my list. I can agree with many statements that he was repetitive/simple on the mic and in the ring, but as shown through the Bruiser Brody clips, there are excepts and he had many great technical outings. I think what made me move Flair down the list was the fact that the man Richard Fliehr is truly that; a Minnesota party-boy obsessed with alcohol and partying. I'm not such a fan of that stuff and can't find an interest in it, and the character Ric Flair was basically that as well. I much prefer Mick Foley, a brilliant wordsmith and promo man, New York Times bestselling author, and the common everyday man.

I hate to say it, but in my opinion Ultimate Warrior is the most overrated of all time. I really enjoy him too, he was my favorite growing up but looking back on him, the only time I can stand him from now was his stint in WCW -- and after finding out what he was like behind the scenes, it was even worse.
I disagree on Flair because of his love for the industry, his willingness to give his body and his life to the ring. Is he the best performer of all time? No. But he works his ass off more than 99% of the others through DECADES...and that speaks a lot.
Far from the top of my list which has HBK as the best wrestler ever, with Bret, Sting, Punk and Taker rounding out the Top 5. This is taking into consideration their performances, historical accolades, fan reaction/appreciation and monetary WORTH to the industry as a whole.

Have you seen ANY of Flair's matches from the eighties? Because every time you state how terrible Ric Flair is, I'm absolutely dumbfounded & can only assume you've only seen his matches from the last 6 years.

Because every time you state how terrible Ric Flair is, I'm absolutely dumbfounded & can only assume you've only seen his matches from the last 6 years. Yes I have, although I don't make it a point to go and watch him either. The only Flair matches I've ever seen that I have truly enjoyed are from his 92/93 run, where his opponents were Randy Savage, Bret Hart and Curt Hennig. It's not hard to tell why those would be good matches as those three could carry anyone to a good match. I suppose he had a couple of decent matches with Ricky Steamboat, too. But again, Steamboat was one hell of a worker, at least good enough to carry Flair to a good match. I just don't see the appeal of a guy who looks like crap, couldn't work more than one different match throughout his career, and someone whose promo's I can't even understand because he shouts them with his hideous speech impediment. I can't possibly take him seriously. He couldn't even dump Sid over the top rope to win the Royal Rumble without COMPLETELY botching it. He was also unprofessional and tried to purposely sabotage other people both in and out of the ring, either with his backstage politics, purposely making them look bad by calling spots mid-match that would have his opponent come off looking or by trying to injure them. In a lot of ways he's like Hogan. He has a circle of guys within the wrestling business who big him up and say he's the best. Arn Anderson, Dusty Rhodes, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham etc. To me, Flair will always be a poor man's Roddy Piper.

I do not feel Flair is the greatest of all time in the ring. Far from it as a mater of fact I do not even think he would make my top five, but the man had something and I can see why so many people loved him. For me it was his whole package not the in ring skills. As a kid of the 80's I ing hated Ric Flair, but in a good way if that makes sense. He was such a great heel that I wanted to see him get beaten every time he was on the screen and to me that must mean that he had something. But as a in ring performer goes even in his prime he never really did it for me. But to be fair it could be because I hated him so much lol.

No that award still goes to Hogan. I must agree with this.

I'm on the fence. I think he's overrated as hell to be honest, but I also find it laughable that some people say he was 'bad' in the ring.

I can't believe this thread exists. Flair wasn't good on the mic? His words didn't flow? Thats be cuase he never wrote anything down! Most was ad libbed. From the heart. Nonsense. Flair is one of the top 5 workers of all time. He sold moves better than anyone. Made every guy he ever got in the ring with better. And loved the business more than anything, more than his family. He prob loved it too much.
Hogan stunk, stinks, and will always stink. Ask any wrestler and they all say his skill set was limited and his matches were slow. But he wasn't the face of wrestling because of that. You were being sold on the character, the body, the personality, the hero.

I'd say he's over rated for what he does now.... he' still trying to do what he done 15 years ago, but he simply doesn't look the part, back in the 80's or W/E he had the perfect hair, the shades the expensive suit the good physique. Now he's old and sagging, his hair is getting thinner every time he's on tv, it always looks like he's drenched with sweat and he's gone to wearing a plain white tee with a cheap looking suit.

I think that as far as Flair's in-ring work is concerned, many people confuse being a great technical wrestler (which he certainly was not) with being a great heel (which he certainly was). He is arguably the best in-ring heel of all-time.

What he's doing now is irrelevant to whether or not his legacy is overrated/underrated. Many athletes, actors, musicians, don't know when its time to hang it up. That doesn't mean their career as a whole was overrated.
