I've been noticing major errors a lot, more recently, and I'm wondering if it's a coincidence (although that's a stretch) or if it is just quality control slipping which does tend to happen when a toy line has been around this long.
I'm not referring to corner cutting or anything, but legitimate mistakes seem to be happening a lot. For instance, I have yet to pick up E17 Sheamus because they've all had horrible red stains on their face or super jacked up looking eyes, but the one that took the cake that I saw tonight was a Sheamus with no Iris or pupil on his left eye. There was a sloppy white spot and that was it. I've also seen John Cena from that set with terrible eyebrows that miss the mark and eyes where one is looking up and one down, and the one I noticed tonight that finally pushed me to bring this topic up was a figure with the boxer band painted across his back to the seam, and none on the front. Just a perfect cut line at the seams on his sides.
The eyebrows have been an issue a lot recently, with figures such as Christian (who wasn't too bad) and Justin Gabriel (who was very bad), and more than a few Orton's with the new scan. My local TRU takes the cake with a BOPPV Big Show that has no eyebrows at all.
That makes three major paint omissions in one night of hunting. I've only ever seen an error that major i.e. paint missing on one other figure in all the time I've hunted. It was a B7 Undertaker with exactly one half of his goatee painted from top to bottom. I guess I might also include my E16 Ezekiel Jackson who is missing the tip of an eyebrow, except that almost looks like a scuff instead of an omission.
I realize, although the odds seem against it, that these could just be freak things that all happened to make it to my area, so I'm wondering if others are seeing a general decline in QC. You can't argue that the entirety of the BOPPV Elite John Cenas that came out in the spring had uniformly great paint apps and the newer Cenas with that scan are looking pretty derpy in comparison. And it's not just Cena, Global Superstars Sheamus and E13 Sheamus have the same scan as E17 and, like I said, I haven't seen a really good one yet. And I've only seen 2 E18 Sin Caras so far but they were botched pretty bad, hell, the proto pic on Ringside is botched.
Prices going up and QC going down are nothing new to the action figure world, it's just kind of disappointing is all.

I totally agree with you. There has been a lot more quality problems on many different figures. My E18 Cara has a bad paint application.

I have been saying this for a couple months now. It really annoys me when my girlfriend points out atleast 3 errors on every figure i have purchased in the last 3 months

Haven't come across this myself, luckily, especially cause I get most of my figures sight-unseen from RSC.

I've had pretty decent luck with them, though. Only had a TNA figure once that was kinda poor, but quality control was really shoddy on them back in 2010-2011. They've improved with each new wave this year while Mattel is declining.

Yeah, I have noticed on Mattel's WWE figures since day one that there is an issue with smearing when it comes to designs and logos painted on the figure, and also a problem with random black smudges on the figure. Even figures that should have no black anywhere on their hair or attire sometimes have random black marks.
It's tough sometimes because with Mattel WWE figures, a lot of this stuff I only find once. SO if I find a figure and they only have one and it's not perfect and I pass on it, I might never EVER find that figure again. So sometimes I find myself having to buy a figure that I'm not completely happy with the paint apps, but I can't take the chance and not buy it because 90% of my Mattel WWE collection are figures I have only seen ONE time and it was when I bought them.

In reference to the random black marks. I recently got BO2012 Cara and it has a random black line down it's leg.

The only issue I've had lately is the "Uncle Leo" eyebrows. I've had to acetone off & repaint eyebrows on Hornswoggle, Christian, & CM Punk.

Here's the thing about QC..
What we see is the finished product, always the same figures in the same type of packaging. Behind the scenes though, Mattel, Hasbro etc have different factories that they utilize for production of various lines. If Mattel changes factories, it is usually a huge process requiring tweeks tothe line and various QC changes, improvements etc. Dealing with one factory alone, even on a repeat line, is difficult to manage from afar.
With the volume of product that Mattel produces I am quite honestly surprised that the QC is as good as it has been. I base this on past conversations I've had with former employees of Toy Biz, Mattel and Hasbro Design Teams, who all face the same hurdles.
The costs have gone up on all aspects of production, manufacturing and shipping yet it can seem like we are getting less for the money. Price versus quality is something that really varies per the consumer. Being involved with the costs of manufacturing and the use of overseas products, I have sadly become somewhat numb to the fact that the price of certain commodities rises on a seemingly weekly basis.
All of this said, there will always be peaks and valleys with regard to QC, while costs will either stay the same or slightly rise over the period of a year. It is unlikely that we will ever see a reduction unless features of the product are reduced or modified.

I finally found an Elite 18 Sin Cara that wasn't painted completely terribly yesterday. No joke, I closely examined 9 different Sin Cara figures before finding this one.... and it's still not very good.
My AJ I received from RSC... her legs have scrapes all over them. Looks like a dog got a hold of it. Very disappointing.
This stuff makes me not want to order them online.

I'm just wondering what to expect given the size and detail of his tats. thanks

I have been fairly lucky, I guess. I have found no such issues. I have both E13 & E17 Sheamus & they are both great figures, IMO. No paint issues, just some minor dirt marks, that washed off easily. I've even had my hands on 2 of the E17 Sheamus(I ordered him from RSC & found him in the store the next day). They were both very well painted. As a matter of fact, I have been very impressed w/ the detailing in the hair on both figures. I have bought figures @ retail & ordered them, sight unseen, from RSC & not had any issues that could not be corrected by washing the figure.

The past 4 or 5 figures that I have bought this month have had stains all over the face. They come off fairly easy but I never used to have this problem. Now its litterally been every figure that I buy has this issue.

i only buy online and sadly it has caused me to accumulate many figures with googley eyes and hovering eyebrows. it REALLY REALLY ruins a figure. like my legends rock, his right eye is looking forward, but his left eye is staring off to the left direction.
as far as random marks, i think only my legends stone cold has a red mark on his thigh. pulled it out of the package and was like WTF, where this RED come from?

I have seen a fair share of smudges and whatnot, but lucky for me not of anything I have bought.
My only complaint is that I wish whoever paints these would learn to paint eyebrows where the actual eyebrow sculpt is. I see this alot with CM Punk figures, and it makes his scan not look like him. Same goes for The Rock.
I understand with costs that a factory might not have time nor money to have people do dry brushes or paint washes to bring out the extra detials, but at least paint the areas that are supposed to be painted.
