In terms of the NFL, I think there a plenty of guys who are in the "top five ever" at their respective position. Brady and Manning are locks. Tony G. I know a lot of people think Tony is on the bubble, but he's onhe of the best tight ends of all time. On the defensive side, you have guys like Lewis, who revolutionized, and changed how the linebacker position was played. Then you have guys like Reed, who also changed how the game was played. People have said that Reed's "decline" is coming because of lack of stats, it all honesty, guys are just avoided Reed now. I'd easily put Reed in there, just for the fact that as you said, people avoid him. Yet he still presents just as much danger. Hell, I can think of atleast 3 plays in the last 2 seasons of him running clear across the field to pick someone off. Not to mention his many Pro Bowls.

NFL:
LaDainian Tomlinson Tom Brady Peyton Manning Drew Brees
should all be locks
NBA:
Kobe Bryant Shaq O'Neal Kevin Garnett Tim Duncan LeBron James Steve Nash (back to back MVPs)
all locks in my book
and I'll throw in Junior Seau in the mix for HOF, but not sure when he qualifies

Can they just put Peyton and Brady in now? Save some spots for later...

Tomlinson should be in, but his last couple years being so mediocre might make him not quite as much of a lock. I wish that wasn't the case as he is my favorite RB of the past decade, but it is what it is, I guess.

How would Gonzo not get in on the first ballot? I had the pleasure of watching him play for many years in Kansas City. If you're discussing the best TE to ever play the game his name is in the top 2 or 3 is it not?

The first ballot stuff is nonsense. They either are a hall of fame player or not. Why play this stupid game of trying to decide why some are more worthy than others? The voting and how people dictate who get's in and when is the worst thing about it. It kind of undermines and belittles the players that do eventually get in.

I hate the whole "first ballot" distinction, like it somehow makes you a more elite hall of famer.

NFL is crazy because they have to induct a minimum each year, and I think they have a max number too. My NFL first ballot would be as follows Farve Manning Brady Tomlinson Ray Lewis Champ Bailey J. Ogden (not mentioned yet) T. Gonzalez
There is a bunch more likely guys including Brees, Urlacher, Ed Reed, Warner, possibly O. Pace, Sappe, and D. Brooks, and others. I felt C. Carter was a first ballot guy though. Curtis Martin was though, and at no point was he the best RB in the game I feel. Ultimately they are all HOFers though, 1st ballot or 15th ballot.

I mean, is Michael Irvin less of a HOFer than some less great players who got in on their first ballot? It just feels silly and pointless to try and put another tier inside something that is already the pinnacle.

Similar to the idiot baseball writers who refuse to vote a player in unanimously. They never have and they won't now. In who's head was Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mantle, etc not a Hall of Famer.
They got a way out now with steroids. Bonds and Clemens are in the upper echelon of all time greats, but will be lucky to ever get in. Greg Maddox should be close to unanimous, but won't be.

Yeah, even in the HOF, some guys are better than others. That's just the way it is. Jerry Rice is better than Michael Irvin. Cy Young is better than Goose Gossage. There's still a hierarchy there.

In the NHL?
Mats Sundin was a great choice. IMO Bure and Shanahan should've been first ballot's too but look how that's gone.

I really only follow the NBA, though I know a little about NFL (mostly my hometeam, the Patriots).
I think Kobe, Shaq, KG, Ray Allen, Pierce, LeBron, Nash, and Kidd are first ballot Hall of Famers. I'm looking forward to the day when KG is inducted, he's my favorite player. I can't wait for that speech about how much he hates the Timberwolves organization. I used to think Allen would be in the Hall of Fame as a Celtic...but I really don't see that happening now considering his animosity towards the team. Outside of those guys...I really can't think of anyone else who is guaranteed to be in the HOF. Dwayne Wade I guess...umm...maybe Dirk or Tim Duncan...

I think Duncan is about as sure a first ballot Hall of Famer you are going to find. Greatest Power Forward of all time. Combined with his College career since it is the Basketball Hall of Fame he is a no doubter. Everyone else you listed are Hall of Famers also, not criticizing at all. I could see Allen and Pierce not getting in a first ballot. Allen is similar to R. Miller, and he didn't get in first go I don't think. I could be wrong. Duncan is just a slam dunk, probably Dirk too.
