Hey, bit of background, I'm normally the kind of guy who buys the odd graphic novel here and there (collected editions) of stories that pique my interest. I'm really interested in the current "Death of the Family" Batman arc, and I'm not sure whether to bite the bullet and start picking up the monthly editions or not. So here's a few questions for you guys:
1: How long will it probably take for DC to release the arc in a collected edition? Am I going to be waiting quite a while or do they like to punch them out pretty quickly. I prefer having the hardcover editions of comics, but if it's going to take ages I might bite the bullet.
2: How important are the tie-ins from other comics. From what I've read the Batgirl comics tie in pretty heavily. Naturally if I don't read these I'll miss out on the overall story, but will I be scratching my head over what's actually happening if I just read the straight Batman comics
3: Do I need to read Court of Owls first? My impressions is I'll be right without it (Although I've heard it's worth reading too so I might pick it up anyway) but I'd like to know for sure.
4: Finally, is it as good as I've been hearing? I've seen the comics getting top marks, and I love a good Joker story.
Thanks for anyone who can help me for this.

1. It will probably take 3 to 5 months for the trade to come out.
2. Not important, you won't be missing any big parts of the story.
3. Nope, there are maybe a couple of references to the court but that's about it, nothing major from what I remember.
4. I'm in the minority but I think it's a terrible story, Snyder's Joker isn't good and it's really badly written with a lot of laughable dialogue.

[shadow=red,left,300]First off, I freaking love the new incarnation of the Joker. Imagine seeing THAT in a dark Gotham City alley...geez. None of the other tie-ins mess with the main story too much. but I really enjoyed Batman & Robin, and The Detective ones. If you haven't read it, Bite the bullet, dive in. It's pretty awesome. And that's coming form The Hood [/shadow]

As a cost-cutting measure, I haven't read any of the tie-ins and didn't feel like I had to to enjoy the main story. I'm sure it would expand on certain things but they're certainly not necessary (though I hear good things about Batman and Robin's tie ins).
The story was fantastic. I loved it. I just read Batman 17 today and thought it was chilling and a great ending to the story.

I read it and felt it was awful. It was an awful depiction of the Joker as well. Just horribly, horribly bad. It was almost like they decided that they would think of every ed up thing someone could do and just have the Joker do them all whether it made any sense at all. A lot of the stuff that happens is just so incredibly random that it strains all credibility. I did not care for the story at all. Bear in mind I am pretty thoroughly unimpressed at the New 52 in general.

The story was a letdown to me considering DC made it out to be the next great Batman story. Joker origionally cutting his face of in Detective Comics 1 was shocking, but had literally nothing to do w/ the current story. Like others said they had Joker doing so much crap that it didn't make sense, and the final payoff was a huge letdown.
