Avengers 2 will suck if they replace him with some other random actor. Tom Cruise nearly got the role of Iron Man once... Tom Freakin' Cruise. RDJ had great chemistry with Hemsworth and Evans in The Avengers too. It's like when they replaced Toby as Spidey. That new guy sucks. Andrew Garfield is 1000x better than 30 year old, dumpy looking, overacting Tobey Maguire Agreed. I thought Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst were both terribly miscast for Spider-man from the start. In retrospect, it's only gotten worse because I think Amazing Spider-man crushed all 3 of the Rami films. Even if you enjoyed those films, I don't think too many people were running around saying Maguire was born to play Spider-man. Guy can definitely act, really well, but he just isn't the ideal Spider-man imo. Robert Downey Jr. was born to be Tony Stark, that's the difference if you ask me.

I guess it depends what Spiderman you're looking at. I'm sure that if you look at all the modern Spiderman crap from the past 10 years or so like the Ultimate line of comics then that Andrew Garfield kid might be ok. I personally like the original stuff that Steve Ditko did, which is why Toby Maguire made such a good Spidey. He embodied everything that the original Spiderman was. I will agree that Kirsten Dunst didn't make for the best Mary Jane though. I thought the girl that played Gwen Stacy in the 3rd Spidey film probably would have made a good MJ, plus she already had the red hair .

Quick! Rush into a civil War storyline and have Captain America kill him.

Andrew Garfield is 1000x better than 30 year old, dumpy looking, overacting Tobey Maguire God, yes. RDJ/Stark and McGuire/Parker are light years apart in difference. This. And fear not, there is absolutely no way that the studio won't shell out the money for Robert Downey Jr. I believe that RDJ genuinely loves the role, and will play the part as long as he can. You can guarantee he'll at least be around for The Avengers 2. There is way too much hype and anticipation around the sequel to lose what is easily the film's biggest name.

I don't see anyone other than Downey Jr playing Tony Stark. I don't see him ever overstaying his welcome.

He'd be a damn fool to walk away from Marvel, they single handedly revived his career; and he in turn, revived the studio. They both owe each other big time. How can you revive a studio if Iron Man was their first film for Marvel Studios.

My ideal scenario for RDJ after Iron Man 3 is obviously The Avengers 2.. Then maybe a couple cameos to stir the spot for Phase III.. Maybe Iron Man 4, and then ultimately finishing with the third Avengers movie.. Let him finish out the trilogy at the very least. I know I wouldn't even consider seeing another Avengers movie without him. And that's not a drastic statement. Marvel has this tendency to piss their actors off.. They already replaced Edward Norton, and pissed off Samuel L. Jackson.. Now they're toying with losing Robert Downey, Jr.. I don't understand their logic. I'm glad they let Norton go, with all the crap surrounding it. SLJ got a nine-picture deal out of it. How are they toying with losing RDJ, they gave him an additional 50 million for Avengers on top of what he made. If he leaves if'll be because he wants to not because they forced him to. They work with their actors and directors a different way than other studios. If the actors/directors don't like it, they shouldn't sign their contracts in the first place then request a bigger paycheck than everyone else. Terrace Howard wanted more than RDJ, and was listening to his agent and looked what happened. One other thing Marvel had nothing to do with Sony replacing Toby, and if it's a reboot why would you use the same actor again. That sounds incredibly stupid.

Well I meant Marvel as an entity over all; and not really REVIVED per say... but Iron Man jump started this epic cinematic universe for Marvel; and a big part of it's success was RDJ.

Which is sort of strange because I'm not sure how good of a fit I feel she was as Gwen. I like her though. I'm personally more of a fan of Conway and DeMatteis when it comes to Spider-man. I also prefer Lee/Romita to Lee/Ditko but I can see where Toby would be a closer representation of those early eras more than Garfield. I'm not a huge BMB fan, and I felt like The Amazing Spider-man was closer to Dan Slott's Spider-Man than it was to Bendis' vision. To each their own. Raimi did try to adapt Ultimate Spidey for Spider-man 3 though. I think that's why it didn't work, as it didn't fit into the world he created with Toby. Didn't mean to turn this into a Spider-man thread either haha.

As much as I like the Iron Man films, if Downey stepped down to only doing Avenger's films after Iron Man 3, I honestly wouldn't mind. I love the first one, enjoy the second one and am looking forward to the third, but eventually the Iron Man flicks are going to basically just be the same thing.

eventually one day he will be too old and both sides will be sick of each other however i much rather them find the next best tony stark rather then a reboot, much too much has happened to this character to start over one day

They want to continue like the Bond films.

I wouldn't be too bothered if he left. He's a great Iron Man but you never know, someone else could do an amazing job too.
At this point I'm used to actors changing being a Hulk fan. I've had to endure three Bruce Banners so this is nothing new.

With the cashcow that Avengers is, he'll most likely stay for Avengers 2 and then leave afterwards. He's 47 now (48 in a month), so if Avengers 2 comes out in 4 or 5 years, it'll put him in his early 50s. Iron Man 3 is the start of the the set up to Avengers 2, so it would be weird if he was in this and not Avengers 2.
I love him as Iron Man, but he does not own the role, just like Heath Ledger does not own The Joker. Another actor will do a good job in the role. And it will not be a reboot since Marvel has set up this whole movie universe. When one of the big actors leave, another will step in as the same character in the same universe.

Life's rough eh, RDJ? Must suck when these are the kind of problems he has to deal with.
