I am super excited for series 9. However, it still bugs me that we haven't gotten more Paul McGann. He's easily one of my favorite Doctors. He is doing a mini audio series as The Doctor with River Song. Might be worth a listen.

They're really good. I feel like Big Finish writers should do some work on the show too. That'd be excellent

That'd be excellent Well if you didn't know, 2005's episode 'Dalek' was based on a Big Finish audio called 'Jubilee', and both the original and TV adaptation were written by Rob Shearman. In the past Mark Gatiss and Paul Cornell have written for Big Finish. I would love for Nicholas Briggs to write an episode of Doctor Who on TV. His Big Finish stories seem to be well received, so I wonder how he'd do on TV.

I always thought this show was just ok, never gave it my time while at the same time I always thought the concept was interesting, only watching a couple of episodes. My mother as a gift gave me series 1 to 7 with all the specials too, I fell in love with this show. I was so amazed by it and all the ideas it had, the old cgi some episodes had didn't hurt my experience at all. I can't understand why I was so indifferent to Dr Who but now I know why it gets all the hype, I know the references, I know why it has such a huge fanbase. I really want to watch old Who now, and listen to some of the audios. Such a great franchise.

Classic Who is a completely different animal though. They serial format took some getting used to as did the BBC production values of the 60s-80s. I'm a huge fan of classic sci-fi with rubber suited monsters and cheap sets but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Tom really comes into his own as the Doctor in this one. Genesis is an outright classic, love it to death.

Yeah, I've been told Classic Who is much slower and not for everyone. I am also a fan of old school sci-fi and tokusatsu shows like Ultraman, which had rubber suited monsters and a lot of cheap sets, those don't bother me at all. I will hopefully listen to some of those Big Finish audio plays too.

I highly recommend The Curse of Peladon and Horror of Fang Rock. EXCELLENT stories.

The Daleks and The Dalek Invasion of Earth are also must watch serials for the first appearances of Daleks. Tomb of the Cybermen is also a classic.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned 'City Of Death' yet. An absolute classic, consistently mentioned as one of the very best. 'Curse Of Fenric' is also good. 'The Five Doctors' is excellent in my opinion, but you may want to leave that one until you've watched some of the first few Doctors. 'The Enemy Of The World' is another great one. More Classic Who serials to mention are 'Day Of The Daleks', 'Earthshock', 'Remembrance Of The Daleks', 'The Caves Of Androzani' and the 'Trial of A Time Lord' season.
By the way, if you do ever check out the very first serial, 'An Unearthly Child', I'd skip anything after Episode 1 if I were you. Episodes 2, 3 & 4 are unwatchable, boring nonsense.

City of Death is OK, but I'm not a huge fan of it, honestly. Fenric is excellent, as is The Five Doctors. The Enemy of the World is BRILLIANT! Troughton did a good job there. The following story, The Web of Fear, is also brilliant. It's a shame Episode 3 remains among the 97 still missing. I hate Day of the Daleks. I really do. Remembrance, Androzani and TOATL are all great. Agree with you about AUC. Episode 1 is good, the rest is dire.

While not everyone can like everything, it's worth noting that 'City Of Death' has a very good reputation in fandom. In Doctor Who Magazine's survey last year, it was voted as the 5th best Doctor Who story of all time. In the same magazine's poll of 2009, it came in 8th place. 1998, 7th place. While it's not my favourite, I do think it is pretty good, and one of the best examples of Classic Who. On the topic of 'Day Of The Daleks', providing you turn CGI effects and modern Dalek voices on, it's a great story, with modern technology managing to make the story reflect the big scope it attempted at the time, replacing the obvious low budget shots. I don't know if you turned CGI effects and modern Dalek voices on when you watched it, but if you didn't, I would certainly recommend rewatching it with those options turned on (assuming you own the DVD)..

I have to say that I have mixed feelings about 'Kinda'. I think the two crewmen reverting back to children mentally is hilarious. However Tegan's Mara dream sequence is really bizarre, and I can't say that I'm a fan of the primitive tribe jungle setting.

I've watched it with both, but I just find it a bit boring. Every Season has it's clunker, and Day is that for me. Nice to see somebody else who reads DWM!

Of the two Mara stories, Snakedance is probably my favourite, but Kinda is excellent. A lot of stories from that period tend to be overlooked, but there are some real gems in there.
