The things Mattel continuously do wrong all have to do with the head of the figure. Whoever is in charge of deciding the color of paint apps on their WWE line should lose their job. I'm sorry but they are awful at what they do for a living. Most of the hair colors are just awful and couldn't be more wrong. - People who have brown hair in real life get JET BLACK hair on their figures. - People who have blond hair in real life get orange/red hair on their figures. The way facial hair is painted is flat out embarrassing and completely incorrect. - Mattel has clearly never heard of STUBBLE. Every person with even an ounce facial hair is painted like they have a full on Grizzly Adams beard. And for being the same company that makes BARBIE DOLLS, they really have no idea how to paint the Divas faces so that their makeup looks even SLIGHTLY like actual makeup. It's a damn shame that the person in charge of paint apps is so bad at his or her job, because the scans are actually REALLY good. But a horrible incompetent painting can ruin even the most perfect scan. Mattel needs to get it together and hire somebody who actually knows what they are doing and has a clue what real people look like in real life. If NECA can produce figures that are the same scale as WWE figures and afford to paint them correctly and keep the figures at a $14.99 price point then Mattel should be able to also. Just a small example of some of NECA's work:    But here's the thing...we complain like Mattel is going to fix these things. I don't think Mattel CARES. I think it's cheaper for them to make botched figures because they know if you want WWE figures you don't have any other choice. So we're going to buy them anyway and the less effort they put into the figure means more profit for them, especially since the prices keep going up. |

Lorenzo's got the right idea. That Jungle Extraction Dutch is a ****ing work of art. I might also pick up battle damaged Jason even though I've only seen a few of his movies. Neca does a great job at making me want to buy figures from properties I like and from ones I don't really know.
Mattel also has a problem with eyebrows. E16 Punk always looked off for me even though the actual scan underneath the paint looked fantastic.

They do such awesome work, and like I was saying, it might be a little cheaper to run production quarterly on assortments that only have 3 figures, but some of the licenses NECA owns can't be cheap. And yet their figures are only $12.99 to $15.99. Their most expensive licenses are still a dollar cheaper than Mattel WWE. Oh, and yes, completely agree that Dutch is amazing. I plan on getting them all, 2 more are on the way, including the one I'm excited about with the torch and mud. And tooling is great on those figures, too. They're super poseable and the articulation is integrated into the sculpt really well. I love Mattel WWE figures, don't get me wrong, but look at Dean's latest Shawn Michaels RR 95 Elite custom to see how a headscan should be painted. That went from being, in my opinion, one of the worst likenesses they had ever done, to being really awesome simply because the paint apps were detailed and correctly colored. |

Thanks Matty, not as though these things are hard enough to find in the first place ^ - Not enough 'first time in the line' guys. How long have they been sitting on that One Man Gang prototype while giving us our EIGHTH Elite Mysterio in Elite 24. - Still giving us figures in damn black attires. I want some more colour in my collection. - Missing the boat on Elite Macho Man Punk and Elite Hitman Punk. Would have been KILLER figures and we're never getting them unless it's an Exclusive and costs a bomb. Nice one. - 'He's not on TV enough' - release another Mysterio. Cut the excuses. - 'Budget, budget, budget' every year we hear this line is #1 and making a boatload of money and selling out. Put your hands in your pockets and spend a little more on these from time to time, please. - You know, you could always spend a little less on your damn packaging. It looks awesome and all, but it's not exactly eco-friendly, either. Look at Liz or Mysterio and how much money is going into wasted plastic packaging around them. So much empty space and a waste of materials. It could instead be going on the figures themselves. - Scale. Started off great, but now we're getting Cody Rhodes bigger than the Rock!? Come on. And I don't know who the hell chose the parts for Ryback, but you're damn blind. - Ignoring your fanbase and customers. Matty forums no longer support any form of life in the WWE section. We don't get Q&As unless it's at a convention, and even then they're 5 minutes long and we never get 'yes/no' answers, always 'stay tuned', 'we'll see' or 'idk lol'. - SHOW US PROTOS BEFORE THE FIGURES GO UP FOR PRE-ORDER, or at least at the SAME TIME. This annoys me so damn much. How can we pre-order something without knowing what the hell it looks like? Absolutely intellectually- disabled. I think you meant atleast 1 of every figure in every case... But anyway I think you raise some great points and I pretty much agree with everything you've said. |

The skinny hourglass torso for the Elites of Punk, Miz, Bryan, etc. I have never understood, since the body sculpts are created via computer, why the basic and Elite sculpts are different. Make one sculpt solid and then take the same sculpt and tool it with the elite ab crunch. Doesn't that sound easy? I don't know why that hasn't happened. Basic Punk, Miz, Bryan, etc. all look fine. Facial hair. Basic Two-packs series 1 Santino and B21 Mason Ryan are the only two figures with well painted stubble? That's a bad ratio. The sharpie beards on guys like Justin Gabriel and B24 Punk just don't cut it. Also, the newest Punk scan is good, but with his head shaved they have him jet black when it should be brown because it's so short. Eyebrow application. Why is it hard to hit the mark? This isn't an isolated problem. There are plenty of examples of figures where the entire run has them wrong. B19 Justin Gabriel, B19 Hornswoggle, E14 and E16 Rock, B22 Christian, and the list goes on. I like Mattel a lot, but with quality control slipping, I am looking at other toy lines that are not raking in the cash like Mattel and their #1 Boy's toy brand in America that do QC so much better. Only having two to three figures in a toy wave every quarter is probably saving production costs for NECA, but it can't be that much, and yet NECA has premium quality paint apps, and I can get a Gears of War figure for the same price as a basic at TRU ($12.99). Mattel used to have nice clean apps. Now you have to hunt high and low to get a figure who's eyes are both looking in the same direction, with eyebrows on the sculpted line, and no slop and stray marks all over. I love how you can see the eyebrow molds and then the eyebrows are just painted on .2 inches above it and are in now way close to the shape of the mold. xD |

burning hammer reminded me of some things.
Too much red & black attires. Just because they're the cheapest colors.
Lack of support. We get the odd question answered by MDT. They ignore matty forums. Yet they do Q&A's called "Ask Matty" on like 10 different website 1 or 2 times a month.
Refusal to make elites of less popular wrestlers. I have a feeling that alot of that is WWE's fault. But if ur the #1 Action figures......u gotta speak up.
Elite packaging look cool. But it is excessive and ppl just steal belts from them all the time.

No. I'm just tired of seeing Rey Mysterio - a guy who is never not injured - getting figures released while other guys who actually *are* on TV week in, week out get totally ignored. Honestly? It's 'brilliant'? Hey, if you like spending your hard-earned money on things you can't even see, more power to you. I actually like to know what I'm buying, though. Call me crazy. |

I'm going with Burning Hammer on the pre-order thing. I don't know who sees a prototype 6 months in advance and goes "Well, here we are 6 months later and I don't think I'm gonna get it. I'm pretty bored..."
After seeing all the protos at SDCC is about the only time I pre-order Mattel products. We've seen the Star Wars 6 inch line since ToyFair and I'm still pooping my pants to get them. The hype machine can't exist without throwing us a bone with photos.
Case in point. Mattel confirms E16 Rock is going to be Survivor Series 2011 attire. Everyone gets excited, "Is it going to be a new headscan with the goatie?" Then the first photos show up and the forum cracks in half with a common cry of "I wish I hadn't pre-ordered that turd of a toy." And I bet everyone who said that said "Never again..."
There seems to be an assumption that Ringside's Preorder is a huge assortment so that when it sells out, people here are thinking that they've sold millions. I would be willing to bet that the backorder is the bigger bump to inventory and that the preorder is modest to test the waters first. Considering that they overnight the initial preorder from freaking China, they probably only order what they think will presell to save money, and then when the backorder arrives it's the regular order. We know that as soon as the backorder arrives it is less than a month before they pop up at retail all over.
I won't hit pre-order without pics, because while they do hit home runs, they also have so-so and flat out awful figures too, and I'm not going to bet the guy who dropped $30 for a Rock with a solid black blob on his chin that's supposed to be a goatee.

The new tooling that NECA has developed an is using line wide for figures like Rocky, Predator, and Friday the 13th is very very solid and a huge improvement over previous attempts. I know the tooling they used back in the day, like the Ninja Gaiden figure you're referring to, used to be flimsy, I had a Street Fighter IV figure break shortly after opening it. The old gears of War figures also used to be prone to breakage a lot, but I picked up Damon Baird (for only $12.99 retail price at TRU!) from Gears of War Judgement, because it was so cheap and looked cool, and it seems like they have worked out all the kinks and made a beautiful and sturdy figure. I might have to go back and get all the GoW3 figures now. |

Another thing I just don't like about Matty, is not getting collectors involved. I would like to see more polls and a way to communicate with Mattel (that they would actually look at and take into consideration)

Like any company that mass produces a product, I'm sure NECA has some defects here and there. How many people have complained about Mattel figures having the legs snap off or the ankles being loose or the paint being smeared and sloppy? It's just part of the mass production process...but assuming that you get a figure that is not flawed in any way shape or form, I'm saying NECA's figures are better in terms of being a more realistic representation of what the character should look like, and they put a lot more effort into their paint apps in terms of getting hair and beards to be the correct colors. |
