I'm sitting here watching Hogan/Flair from MSG off the Greatest Stars of the 90s DVD (Late 1991). During Flair's intro they blacked out the belt he had because he wasn't recognized as the "real world's champion."
Anyways, they did a crappy job of the blackout & you can clearly see he had one of the WWF tag team titles. I know we discussed this a while back & there was the whole Herd/WCW title belt issue. But was there a reason they used the tag belt? Was it more of a filler than anything?

Indeed it was just filler. The reason for the use of the tag belt during his "real world champion" run is actually quite simple. It clearly and boldy had the word "world" across the plate. It was visible enough to the firs t few rows to convey the thought that he was indeed the real world champion. The size of the belt itself was somewhat similar in size to the nwa/wcw belt,so it could be digitized and appear that they were censoring the real belt. How anyone thought we couldn't tell it was a tag belt (digitized or not) is beyond me.

Yea it was a filler. After he gave Big Gold back to WCW, McMahon/Flair had the Vegas Gold belt created but was quickly sued so they just switched to a tag team title and blurred it out.

Years ago in some old wrestling magazine, I remember seeing a black and white picture of Flair with that belt and although you could clearly tell it was a tag belt, if you looked closely, they took off the words "tag team" on the belt and put about 3 diamonds in that spot instead. It looked nice actually.

I though the digitising or blacking out was a clever idea to hide the loss of the real NWA belt - if they had only managed to make sure it was completely covered! Surely it would have been easier to make a similar looking big gold belt that wouldn't have been open to copyright issues especially as the gimmick was for one of the biggest stars in the game at that point? Always though Vince slipped up on this one

They made a belt that looked very close to the Big Gold and Flair shot a couple promos with it in Vegas (thus the belt getting the nickname Vegas Gold) however WCW sued them and it was scrapped.

I like this belt better than the WHC. I wish a Deluxe Replica of this belt was on the market.

Lol @ the term "belt junkie" pretty much! I've loved wrestling Title Belts since I was a kid,and became pretty obsessed with designs and such over the years. I used to make my own custom ones for nearly a decade.

I never understood how WCW could sue the WWE at the time over Flair using that belt on their television. That title belt was never really the WCW World Title. WCW called it that, but it was still recognized as the NWA World Title.
When Flair did give the belt back, it didn't go to WCW, it went to the NWA. And this is something I will never understand...
WCW wanted to distance themselves from the NWA in 1991, and then in 1992, WCW gets with the NWA and has a joint tournament involving NJPW and WCW to crown a new NWA World Champion in Japan. That was when Masa Chono beat Rick Rude to become NWA World Champion. Then at Halloween Havoc they have Chono come in and defend the NWA World Title against Rick Rude, and at the same time Ron Simmons is defending the WCW World Title against The Barbarian.
This of course would go on for a year before WCW withdrew from the NWA, thus keeping the Big Gold Belt, and not even having a proper name for it. (Which I will never understand how WCW got to keep the belt, when it should have been given back to the NWA)
So then all that did was mess up the real chance that Rick Rude had at being a recognized World Champion, because he was then called the WCW International Champion.
Such a cluster feck that WCW was at times.

It's threads like these that make me remember why I love wrestling. This board might be my favorite of all of the boards on here, although I'm not a very active poster. Thanks to all involved. Man, that 'bootleg' World title is sharp!
