What an awesome Rumble. One of my favorites. Alos may be the quickest face to heel turn in history. Big Show returned, after a few months off, to a huge pop......and within 2 minutes turned heel by chokeslamming Rock thru the announce table.

Wow this is weird, I just finished watching this rumble about an hour and a half ago.
One thing I don't get... As much as I'm a fan of the guy, why is Billy in the final 4 over the Undertaker? Maybe they were gonna push him again? He also got a great pop.

I think Billy Gunn was genuinely in line for some kinda push in 2001.....then he got beat by Benoit for the IC title(or was that before?)and that was it.....
to me,the booking of this Rumble suggested they had something in store for him.but plans obviously changed.....
the image of the blood soaked Austin bouncing back to the middle of the ring after winning this is one of my favourite ever.
also a hell of a Rumble for The Kane character.he needed it too after that loss to Jericho @ Armageddon 2000.

My favorite version of Kane. Even thought he was always a similar character. His best look.

Definitely one of Kane's best looks, but I'll always like his debut and inverted debut the best.

Greatest Rumble of all time and the first PPV I ever ordered and watched at home.
Kane should've won.

Gunn/Benoit was Armageddon 2000 as well. It is strange to have Gunn in the last 4, maybe they hadn't quite got the last 4 concept up to that point or someone messed up an elimination previously and there was meant to be another member in it. There's also the possibility that, although the roster quite stacked, there wasn't anyone else that was viable. The undercard had a a lot of talent, overall one of th best Rumbles from start to finish with no let up in top talent. Everyone seems in their/close to their prime as well, factor in the WWF where close to finalising their victory over WCW and there is just that buzz and greatness factor around this event. Too it off with one of my favourite stages and the design of the logos on the ring apron an such and it was the WrestleMania 17 of the Royal Rumbles, such a great time that culminated perfectly at WM.

A top 5 rumble for me easily. Gunn always seemed in line for a push but for whatever reason couldn't get over enough or kept getting injured. That and the fact that the month before this Benoit literally schooled him in their IC Title match. I remember big promotional work for Billy's return going into the 2004 Royal Rumble but nothing was done after that either. I've never seen the guy as main event material but the WWE always seemed to have a love/hate relationship in that they'd push him a little then kill it. He seemed to be getting over decently in 2003 when paired w/ Torrie Wilson but of course he blew it again because of the injury bug.
My top 5 rumble matches would be...
1) 2004 2) 1992 3) 1997 4) 2001 5) 1998

I may be biast because I'ma huge fan, but Kane should have won. It was set up perfect and then Austin ruined it, lol Can't complain to much though, that's the greatest rumble performance of all time. And plus, Austin/Rock at WM17 is my favourite match of all time. Looking back, wouldn't it have been great if Kane won and taker beat rock at no way out and those two had the tile match at mania? Considering they had that moment in the match it would have been perfect.

Kane should've won? my God whats the weather like on your planet lads?LOL.... unfortunately for all the kane fans Austin was the man here at this time.Vince was planning a blockbuster for WM17 and I don't reckon Kane(the upper tier Jobber)vs Rock would've cut the mustard!! seriously though job done and I get the love for Kane in this RR.....Kane looked great coming outta this and they rebuilt him effectively in 2001. another time and another RTWM in the absence of a few big guys?this would've been ideal for Kane to win.he was a monster in this.

I wonder why Haku was gone so fast? I remember them teaming him up with Rikishi for a while, then gone.

Gunn was in the final four just to give his "The One" gimmick a little push.

Gunn was in the final four just to give his "The One" gimmick a little push. Nah, he'd already been The One at that point for quite a while. I definitely think they may have had some kind of plan for him, at The Survivor Series he put on an extremely strong performance, being the last member left on his team and still eliminating 2 (nearly 3) of the Radicalz before being double teamed to lose. I think he may have got injured as he was absent from Mania, then pretty much nothing until Billy & Chuck around the "InVasion" PPV. Oh, a short lived Tag Team with Big Show for a few weeks before th InVasion PPV. I guess they went sour on him again.

Loved this Rumble, and truly thought at the time Kane would win, but all in all it was fantastic and very entertaining.

My favorite Rumble of all time. This was the first Rumble to go by since I became a big fan of Wrestling. Kane was (and still is) my favorite and it was a joy to see him dominate this Rumble. Was kinda pissed that Austin won, but then again, we got Rock/Austin II at Mania.
Man Kane was so over in 2001, it was great! And that is my favorite attire of his. Kinda weird looking back that he goes on to be in a match for The Hardcore title at Wrestlemania after this. It was a good Hardcore match (one of my favorites), but maybe Kane should of been in a higher tier match at WMX7.
