I wish Bob would have gotten a longer run with it in 1994. His run is still one of the most baffling decisions ever. Why on earth Vince put the title on someone who was from before Hogan's time when he was promoting the new stars is beyond me. Especially when you consider that Savage was cut from WM9 because of his "age". That title reign from Survivor Series to the Diesel squash should have been Owen Hart's. Owen never wanted the title. He was a family man and having the belt would have kept him away from his family more then he wanted. I nice thought but there are just some guys that real life mean more then caring a metal belt and traveling. As a Tag Team Champion he could stay home more which is why he had them more times then not.

He would have only held it for a few days, and it would have legitimized a rising star rather than one who was only an active competitor for another year.

Bob Backlund hands down was the face of the company for his six year reign. If you haven't seen any of his high profile matches you are missing out on some of the best story telling and technical wrestling of that generation.

Bob Backlund's style has not aged well in the last 30 years. The industry has changed too much from the technician based style we saw in the 60-'s to 80's. Granted, Backlund did have excellent matches in his day. But to a modern audience, it doesn't translate well.

A good match or worker never changes and stay classic, it's the modern audience not educating themselves with the classic style that is at fault and that has always been the case.

I have been caught up in so much not to respond to your post Road Warrior but in hindsight, you are correct. The modern audience is accustomed to certain spots in what they see. While Bret Hart was a technician based wrestler, a lot of his matches aged well. One notable encounter was his submission match versus Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13. This is one of the few matches from the New Generation Era that aged well. If a newer fan can watch this match and be invested into it, rest assured it has aged well. In Bob Backlund case, thanks to the way today's audiences view classic matches, his matches won't be revered to a newer fan.
