Who do you consider to be the best wrestler who was able to be a great heel and a great face? I have to go with Hulk Hogan on this one. He was the ultimate good guy/hero who changed wrestling forever, and he could still get a massive pop today in front of a WWE crowd by playing that same character. He also changed the wrestling world when he turned heel and went on to lead the nWo in a very successful move for not just WCW but the whole world of wrestling. I don't think anyone has ever done such a great job as being a face and a heel than Hulk, but I'd like to hear who you all think was the best. I had not seen a post about this before so I wanted to try to come up with something a little different

I agree that the definitive answer is Hogan. Others that played heel/face well: Randy savage Jake Roberts Ric Flair (though I've never enjoyed him as a face) Undertaker Shawn Michaels The Rock

If we are talking commercial success then we can easily say Hogan.
Personally, I'll say Shawn Michaels. Most over face in the company in 1996, and then the most hated heel in the company by fall of 1997.

Going with more recent stars, I'd say Jericho did an awesome job on both roles.
As a face, he was able to make you laugh. He joked without ever being cheesy and was very well liked within the crowd. On the other hand, as a heel he was excellent too.

Pretty much. He was the face of WWE along with Austin during the Attitude Era, and "Rocky" chants were everywhere. Conversely, "Rocky Sucks" chants were everywhere during his Nation days (my personal favorite of his runs) and his time in the Corporation.

It has to be Hogan.
Everyone else that I can think of was better as either a heel or a face, but Hogan was just a successful as a face as he was a heel.
I can literally not think of another person who fits the criteria for this question more than Hogan.

Superstar- I would say for someone more recent edge did really well as a face and heel. Diva would have to be either trish stratus or lita.

I think it's Hogan without question. Followed by The Rock & The Undertaker. All three of those guys played both roles to absolute perfection.

Bret Hart was good in the fact he didn't alter his personality that much or anything else for that matter to get a certain reaction.

Top 5:
1. Hulk Hogan - No one saw his nWo heel turn coming and it helped the industry reach a popularity it hadn't seen since the invention of television.
2. Roddy Piper - When he was a heel he made you absolutely hate him and as a face he had you completely routing for him. If he had more commercial success I would have rated him #1
3. Bret Hart - Never really changed his gimmick or personality but could garner either a heel or face reaction almost based entirely by what he said on the mic.
4. Andre the Giant - Went from being the biggest attraction in the industry to being the biggest heel in the industry just by ripping off Hogan's shirt off. If Andre was in better health when that happened he would be higher on my list.
5. Triple H - The most hated man over the last decade hands down. When he worked as a face all of "Evil" transgressions were forgotten.

Hulk Hogan without question.....he was as brilliant a heel as he was face.
others mentioned in this thread:
Randy Savage-always a much better heel than face Flair-see above HHH-a natural heel....I bought him as a face ONCE-in DX 98/99

The Rock. Perfect face in 2000, perfect heel in 2003.

Rock is no. 1 for me. He could effortlessly do both. No hiccups. Such a natural.
I love Hogan, but he had cheesey apsects of both characters.
Others would be Taker, Punk, and HBK. Punk's face character isn't much different from his heel character; he just stops insulting the fans and all of a sudden he's a face.
We are all pretty much mentioning some of the greatest of all time. And when you are the GOAT, you succeed as both.

Bret Hart. No matter if he was heel or face he would get the exact reactions he was supposed to. Rock, Piper, Nash, Hogan, Outlaws are all also very close though.
Flair was never a good face. He, like Shawn was just a natural heel. Too unlikeable to be considered a good face. And both did their best work when they were heels.
Austin was actually a good heel in 96, but it's hard to list him after his god-awful heel run in 01.

I think Bret's work in 1997 was awesome. We all know he was great as a clean cut baby face, but the anti American angle was great.
I think Shawn also did well in both rolls. However, before his return, he was more of a natural heel. 96 to me felt very forced, even he wasn't all for the "boyhood dream" gimmick.
Jericho was also great at both. In 2001, he was as over as ever as a face. When he did the short haired heel gimmick, he really got under people's skin.
