A while back I was watching some full episodes of Raw from early in 1998, and there would be the call-in line commercials. JR would say something like "which WCW star is thinking of showing up on the Royal Rumble, and what is Hulk Hogan doing talking about (such and such)...call the hot line!"
My question is, what WAS all that? Just people paying ridiculous amounts of money per minute on vague 'insider' tips? Anything more?
Got thinking about it today, thought maybe one of the guys here might know more, or maybe even might have called as a kid.

Wasn't it just copying WCW's one? I know Bischoff talks about the WCW one in his book and how much he hated it.

Those things were such a big deal in the mid-late 90s.
The "superstar line" and "Ross report".
I never called.

I guess nobody did. I didn't figure it was anything really, but I was kinda wondering if anyone here could shed some insight on what exactly happened when you called that line.

I remember during PPVs they would usually have Sunny and Todd Pettengill hosting the "Superstar Line" and they would have (fill in the blank wrestler) on the phone after a match.
I'm not sure if you would listen in live like a Byte This segment or something or if it was just pre recorded stuff.

One thing I remember about reading the Ross Report was when Jim Ross was praising the **** out of John Cena way before his SmackDown debut. There used to be a wrestling Q&A site I would frequent, and the guy doing all the question answering was a huge Brock Lesnar and John Cena fan long before their debuts. Back when Cena was "Prototype."

In some of the earlier rumbles they used to tell you to phone the superstar hotline to find out who was next.

I didn't waste time with WCW's hotline.
I called the WWF's and got told Jericho was gonna debut as X-Calibur/DX member.
