Man that sucks. You can always call your bank and they will release the hold if you explain to them what happened. If it is after hours, and you bank with a smaller, local bank without 24 hour customer service......you are screwed. Not cool at all. Yeah, I respect their cautiousness, but they are quick to pull the trigger on it. My only problem with that is that they don't tell me & I can't see it in my online banking. They always have me call a customer service number that'll make you jump through hoops to unfreeze things or go in person & they'll call for you to do (which I prefer, since bankers don't have to sit on hold for long). It happened one time on a trip out of town with my (at the time) girlfriend & they made me go to a location for a new card…lol it wasn't easy to find one in the area either.

False and false. Please check your facts before you post this crap. Every time I travel I use just by debit card. If it really did "freeze all the funds in my account" then once I got the car at the airport I'd be screwed. But it doesn't. No issues at all. You can absolutely rent a car and check into a hotel with a debit card. I do it several times a year. Not false. And no sh*t you'd be screwed. Who wouldn't be if all of your funds were placed on a hold. Check your facts and learn how to speak to someone before you shoot off at the mouth behind your computer screen. It happens to a lot of people who have accounts with small, local banks. If you bank nationally, you may not encounter this problem. My dad is a district branch director for Chase. I know what I'm tal;king about. I travel several times a year and have no credit cards. They do NOT freeze your bank account. It's a lie to claim they do. My debit card is with a local bank BTW. If your dad says this happens, he is flat out wrong. You're saying I get off the plane go to rent a car and now I don't have access to any of my funds? That's ridiculous. You have multiple people in this thread alone that has experienced this. It hasn't happened to you. Bravo. But I hope something worse is in store in your future. Because you have no idea how to treat or speak to people. Yeah, my dad, the guy with 2 college degrees and makes 6 figures a year is wrong and is a liar. But the doofus on the internet, who's biggest accomplishment in life is being a ten year member on a message board, is correct and knows all. Sorry, didn't mean to toot my father's horn.....but that's the position you put me in. So, toot toot!

Let's ask the guy who sells credit cards for a living if debit cards are bad. Think about it for a second. How many people travel every day? You really think that they get off the plane, pay for their rental car and have no funds at all? People would be rioting in the streets if that happened. It just doesn't happen. The problem is they put a hold on your account for the total cost of the rental. Then people don't balance their checkbooks, think they still have that money and go spend it. Who's problem is this? They don't freeze your entire account. If your card is lost, the limit is $50. Same as credit cards. This is federal law. Go check the FDIC - www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/information/ncpw/cardstopten.html or you could just ask your dad who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Your ignorance is in full beast mode now. My Dad works for Chase bank. He resides over 19 branches. Have you never heard of Chase? Because they have debit cards. Omg they're a bank!

close-mindedness won't get you very far…even if you disagree, generally it's only a conversation if you listen & respect -- you were in full blown argument mode (You're right, we're wrong) I have gone to hotels with debit cards & been told, it is on hold for a certain amount while we have it - incase I damage the room & that way, they can make sure I don't go spending what could potentially need to cover the room…..it doesn't happen to everyone everywhere, but it does happen on a larger amount than just the agreed room rental fee (depends on the hotel & your bank to what degree) *like talking to a wall though, so why do I bother

What was said though is that you shouldn't use a debit card because they freeze your entire account. That is completely false. Sent from my Nexus 10 using proboards

Sent from my Nexus 10 using proboards that's fair; the amount varies from hotel to hotel & can be large enough to wipe some people's accounts out though, which is why it'll be assumed to "freeze" the whole thing……depending on your bank, it can also last up to a week for the hold (which isn't easy for people with small accounts) just curious, have you ever had trouble with daily spending limits?

I've never had it be anywhere close to large enough to wipe out a bank account. They hold the cost of the entire bill (which is fine you're paying it anyways) and then maybe a few hundred over that. I've ever ever had it even impact my spending ever. I budget for my vacation of course so I make sure I have enough to cover my entire vacation. The hold lasts 3 business days (per Visa's policy) at least that's my understanding. I've never seen or heard of them last longer than that TBH. I've run into the daily spending limit once or twice, but credit cards have the same thing. It's for your protection if the card gets stolen so it makes sense. Limits everyone's losses. I've just called the bank and had them raise it. It's a 2-3 min phone call.
