Wrestling is one of those things that many grow up loving and that's what drives them to pursue it. I'd say most are aware of its history, whether they decide to act like it or not.

I can't like someone who hasn't been a life long fan. Just can't. Isn't Brock Lesnar your 2nd favorite?

I say yes because wrestlers before paved the way for them. For example when Punk does the elbow drop and wears gear such as Macho Man and Bret Hart it is paying respect to them. I actually do not look at dropping a crappy looking elbow to be much of a tribute to anyone. I also find it appalling that he capitalizes on legends attire to get merch dollars. Yes, I'm sure he wore Macho and Hart tribute attired to get "merch dollars." Savage is one of his all time favorites and he wanted to pay tribute when he died and he did the Hitman attire out if respect which Bret was a fan of. We get it, you don't like Punk.

When I saw this thread, I immediately thought of Cameron saying she didn't know who Sid Justice was when she was having a war of words with a fake Sid account last year.

Thanks for the wide swath of answers! The idea of accusing Punk of wearing the tribute attires as a merch ploy is pretty weak to me to be honest.
Also, I'm not saying that a guy has to have an encyclopedic knowledge of history and every worker who held the NWA title, but it does matter to me if they care about the way Flair or Savage influenced the industry...
Also, this doesn't have to be about current stars, it defiantly applies to past stars like Warrior who by most accounts didn't care about the art beyond it being a way to make cash and show off his body. (which as I said, I'm not totally holding it against anyone who looks at is a job, and a way to provide for yourself and your family especially when you're still good at it)

No. Not really. I mean look at Punk. He's a life long fan but is one of the biggest jerks in the biz. In the end 90% of all that matters is, am I entertained?

The Punk "flailing elbow" comes off more disrespectful than respectful. Hasn't he ever watched a Macho Man tape? He probably doesn't want to hurt anybody. A lot of Macho Man's opponents said it hurt like hell.

Who is the other Taz? The little oompah loompah guy from Royal Rumble 2000? This is the other Taz: Yeah, that guy. Always wore funny costumes. The garbage man one was a lot better than his little mankini singlet thing.

I'll keep this brief, but honest.
Those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it. The men & women who do not love their art enough to crave indulgence to the point that the contemporary supply will not satisfy them are not truly passionate for their craft.
One's desire to understand & absorb their art's history is a reflection of their sincerity. The end all-be all for a true wrestler is to perform great stories inside those ropes & they should have appreciation along with rational grattitude for everyone responsible for the craft that gives them meaning still being here for them to carry on.
It's a requirement of greatness to love what you do, respect those who positively contributed to the art before you, & make sure that history is not lost.
