His sexual preference wont be the distraction. The media circus that follows him around will be the distraction. I cant say that I blame teams for avoiding media circuses. The same can be said for Tim Tebow. While he's not starting caliber NFL QB, he is certainly better then a lot of 2nd & 3rd stringers. However, he wont get a shot because everywhere it pops up, its a circus so teams avoid him. Im sure may (extreme) pro gay rights activists wont see this though and just blame it on him being gay.

Listen, we need to get passed this first wave of guys coming out so we can all move forward. Pointing out that a guy is different, every time a guy is different, doesn't help put people on the same level. Also, let's not treat this like it's Jackie Robinson sh*t. There isn't a rule that you can't play in the NFL if you're gay. I'm all for the gay community having people to idolize within the gay community. If Aaron Rodgers really is gay, all Packers vs Bears jokes aside, I wish he would come out. Why? Because if Aaron Rodgers can be gay, and one of the best QBs in football, then anyone can be gay. At which point, we can stop asking the question what these guys are doing when they go home at night, which is what I desperately want to happen.
I think the real gift is when people genuinely don't care. Matt Bomer from White Collar is gay, and the ONLY time I ever even think about that is when my wife tells my I'm lucky he's gay haha. To me, he's Neil Caffrey, suave debonaire and criminal, or not so criminal, genius. Before that he was the light of Eliza Dushku's life on Tru Calling. To someone else, he might be a leader in the gay community for being a successful actor and star, but that's what's great about it. He can be both and we can all just watch TV like normal people.
When stuff like this hits the news, my honest reaction is to roll my eyes. Why? Not because I think the guy should hide who he is on the field or to the public, but because it shouldn't matter. If the guy is one of the best in the world at what he does then his sexual orientation is of zero concern to me. There is always going to be prejudice in the world. We make fun of fat people, short people, ugly people, the way people dress, how they talk, all of this is extremely common place in our society. So I think we need to get this to a certain level as a society and then move forward. I just hope the goal is equal treatment, and not special treatment.

I agree with this, and it's why I don't get upset when they make a big deal out of this particular situation. We HAVE to have a few of these situations, where everyone goes crazy, in order for it to become commonplace and be considered a normalcy. If Sam is willing to be a "martyr" for the cause, so to speak, then good for him. I think he understands what he's doing. I don't think he simply wants a ridiculous amount of attention as some seem to claim, I think he genuinely wants to get the ball rolling so we can get past this phase of people caring. |

Who cares someone's sexual orientation if he can play ball n help a team win then great but if he comes in with an attitude and distraction then he'll no but geesh the littlest things people make big deal out of let him live

Should it be a big deal? No. Is it? Yes. We can't simply say ignore it because it won't be. As J12 said, we need a few to come out before it stars being something no one really cares about. Until that time comes, it will continue to be a big deal. There is no rule prohibiting gay players but the attitudes fostered in the locker room and management and even the public make conditions terrible for gay players. |

He's a bit undersized for a DE playing in a 4-3 defense. He should be able to find a home, but that hurts his stock a fair bit. He worked out a bit as an outside linebacker, but apparently didn't fare all too well. Granted, a lot of that could have to do with the pressure of playing in front of a bunch of NFL scouts with minimal experience at that position, but regardless, it's a conversation piece. |

Its a sad reflection on society when someone comes out and it makes prime time news,
Here's hoping for the time it doesn't make waves when it just doesn't matter but sadly we're not there yet.
I hope it doesn't affect his draft prospects, I hope it doesn't effect how the fans react to him but it only takes one biggot to open his mouth or think I don't want a f@g in my team to destroy a players confidence, obviously he's strong minded or he wouldn't have come out so hopefully any negativity will wash over him.
