I'm really curious to see who they bring in for S2. It's going to be hard to top this season in terms of star power.

Needless to say, I think this is the most well-written, best executed TV show I have ever seen. That's including Breaking Bad. I just love the philosophy of both Rust and Marty, as well as the nuance of the mystery, the supporting details, the setting, tone, direction. This has elevated itself, imo, to a level of cinema. Agreed. Six episodes and I already consider it an all time great in television.

I can get behind two female detectives. I'm curious as to who they pick if that's true. As long as the acting and the writing stays the same then it should be great. Maybe add 2 more episodes to each season.

i'm halfway though the fourth episode and it's pretty compelling stuff. best not to compare it to anything else - as it stands, it's been really good so far.

Along with Community, this show has the best character-focused writing. By that I mean, character development is clearly more important than the overarching storyline during the episodes. I love this show.

I love this show. Absolutely true. Murder stories are a dime a dozen. Where this one succeeds is entirely in the character driven plot. The troubling thing for me, is how subsequent seasons are suppose to unfold without the same characters. That's gonna be a challenge.

That final episode for season 1, man. I love this show, I think the writing and locations will be great, just hope the actors they pick give it their all for their respective season.

I loved the finale. Glad we didn't get some unnecessary twist. It was amazing to see how much both of the characters had evolved and bonded by the end.
Overall this season probably is in my top 3 all time favorite tv seasons.

I thought the finale placed it above all the other shows I love. Game of Thrones, Supernatural, Entourage, Buffy, they all pale in comparison.
It's genius.
Also, I found the imagery in the final episode to be extremely compelling. It really opened the show to the possibility of spirituality and something beyond our own existence in an intelligent, and deep, manner.
The acting was superb. The writing even better, and am I the only one who thinks the guy that played Errol delivered in an incredible way with far less screen time than the others had?
I'm cool with two female leads next season -- but I know there are a TON of actors I'd like to see take this show on down the road. A season with Steve Buscemi and John Leguizamo would be on par with the acting we got this season. That's just to name two.

It was great to start but I couldn't figure out when the show started going downhill and ended really meh. Someone pointed out elsewhere that the show seemed different to them after Rust and Marty stopped being interviewed. And that made me realize that was the moment. After the interviews were done is when the show changed for me and I didn't really care for it.

I just finished the 7th and 8th episodes so I can finally come in here and read/respond. I love this show and I was happy with the way it ended. The ending scene with Rust and Marty was really great. It should do very come Emmy time because everything about this show is top notch (acting, writing, directing). As for the second season staring two female detectives that is cool with me. As long as they cast strong female leads and retain the same directors/writers it should continue to be one of the best mini-series around. I'm trying to think of some good female leads. Would anyone care for Julianne Moore or Melissa Leo? They both have connections with HBO at least (Game Change and Treme) and both are Oscar nominated (Leo won too).

The second season is an entirely new story with new characters? They aren't continuing with Rust and Marty? I'll advocate for Michael Michele. I love Julianne Moore too.

No, every season of True Detective will be it's own story. Whether or not the overarching story from the first season will be the constant link -- they haven't said, yet. But yes, 2 new characters every season. Matt M. has said definitively that he wont be back. Also, Jodie Foster and Marissa Tomei get my top choices, if they go with 2 women.
