^ Great choices as well. As for the second season staring two female detectives that is cool with me. As long as they cast strong female leads and retain the same directors/writers it should continue to be one of the best mini-series around. I'm trying to think of some good female leads. Would anyone care for Julianne Moore or Melissa Leo? They both have connections with HBO at least (Game Change and Treme) and both are Oscar nominated (Leo won too). The second season is an entirely new story with new characters? They aren't continuing with Rust and Marty? I'll advocate for Michael Michele. I love Julianne Moore too. Yeah like American Horror Story it is going to switch out the cast although I highly doubt actors from this season will show up in other seasons like AHS.

just finished and season 1 definitely puts it into top 10 shows for me. always enjoyed woody harrelson but mcg has always been 'that guy i confuse with bradley cooper'. i'd never seen him in anything even half decent and then he comes along and gives us one of the greatest tv characters ever. his little monologues really, really made the show. in addition the set pieces (especially the locations in the finale) and expert directing really made the show stand out. what a ride. i'm more exited to see where and perhaps when season 2 is set as opposed to who's in it. i knew next to nothing about louisiana and hope they give us a similar setting that isn't so exposed in pop culture.
*spoilers*
i did find the ending a little too neat and optimistic for my liking. i would have preferred something darker and more ambiguous as that would fit more with the rest of the show. saying that, the epilogue did give us rust's amazing monologue where his outlook shifted and he saw more light than dark.
i did see it ending with rust and marty bleeding out in the hole and it fading to black with the knowledge that live or die, the truth was to be leaked within 24 hours. when marty was calling out to the chopper from within carcosa i got shades of the ending of the film 'prisoners' and i feel that would have been a much more memorable way to close the show.
i felt the same way i did about breaking bad's finale -- we won't be talking about it a few years down the line. and that's a shame.

great show, but the last two episodes were too heavy of wrap ups. it was so intricately conceptualized - i got the idea that this 'yellow giant' was indeed this multi-faceted individual who had somehow found a way to take his southern skeletons from his closet and modernize them...instead we got weird clippings of some deranged dude having incestual relations with his half intellectually- disabled sister. felt like a rushed punisher max comic.
the show still was fantastic though...but not big on the ending.

Skipped passed every post in here, in case of spoilers.
I watched E2 last night and this show is incredible. I'll come back when I'm done.

I'm sorry to bump an old thread but damn that...
I just binge watched this entire series in two days. Hands down one of (if not the) best show I've ever seen. It felt like the movie Se7en but in weekly television form.
Storytelling. Excellent. Character development. Excellent. Intrigue. Mystery. Suspense. Excellent.
It was dark, it was gritty and it was absolutely fantastic. 10/10. I loved every second.

Just picked it up on Blu ray so I'm proud to say I own it now.
*Spoiler Alert*
I wasn't expecting a happy ending.

Yeah this show is just incredible. There are one or two shows I prefer overall for their multi-season storylines, but as an individual season TD S1 is probably the greatest single season of programming I have ever seen. A picture similar to Bash's sig is my Twitter header. Matthew was incredible, and IMO he deserved the best actor Emmy over Bryan Cranston (who was himself fantastic). Woody also gets forgotten a lot because Matthew had more to work with, but he absolutely killed it too.
Apparently they didn't really like each other at first which must have helped add to the tension between the two in the early stages. I hear they're friends now though which is cool.
I've shown this show to as many of my friends as I can since I got it on DVD and they all absolutely loved it. I also re-watched it with my Dad (he was watching for the first time) and it has that Game of Thrones quality of being super-interesting with a re-watch. I picked up on way more of the little things in the case that passed me by first time around. Would definitely recommend doing it to really appreciate the depth of the story.
Like Bash I wasn't expecting a happy ending (I was certain Rust would die) but I was really pleased when there was one. I was invested in these characters and it really felt like they earned that happy ending, which I can't say of most shows.
Really excited for season 2, although I don't expect it to quite match the brilliance of season 1. The choice of backwater California for a setting is really interesting, and doesn't seem to be something that has been done before. Vince Vaughn as the main villain is fantastic too - not only will we see much more of the villain than in season 1, but it really gives him an opportunity to show the acting skills that I'm sure are underneath his comedy demeanour. This show, first with Matthew and now with Vince, could really gain a reputation for reviving actor's dramatic careers.
