Cruiserweight Classic #6: May 6th, 2015 – Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida
The second round continues, but first, a short video aired to recap last week’s events. Marty Scurll advanced by defeating Tajiri, while Fenix bested Gran Metalik. Mauro Ranallo and William Regal introduced the show and sent it to the ring.
CRUISERWEIGHT CLASSIC SECOND ROUND – ANDRADE ALMAS VS. RICH SWANN; Polar opposite personalities in this match. The high energy Rich Swann against the tranquilo Andrade Almas. Those clashes came into play, as Swann frustrated Almas several times. Almas got serious and more vicious, putting a stop to Swann’s antics. He finished him off with a hammerlock DDT in 11:36. The win puts Almas into the Sweet Sixteen, where he’ll go one on one with fellow Mexico representative, Fenix.
An advertisement ran to promote Payback, set to "Heavydirtysoul" by Twenty One Pilots.
Former Cruiserweight Champion Shane Helms came in and ran down some Bracketology. Our first Sweet Sixteen matchup is now set, with Fenix taking on Andrade Almas. Next week, the second round will officially wrap, cementing the Quarterfinal matchups.
CRUISERWEIGHT CLASSIC SECOND ROUND – ALEX SHELLEY VS. THE BRIAN KENDRICK; A battle of American veterans. Alex Shelley turns 32, while Kendrick will be 36, both later this month. They took it to the ground, where Kendrick found himself a bit outmatched. Because of this, he went to a more aggressive style. Unlike Almas earlier, it didn’t fully work. Shelley made him submit to the Border City Stretch in 8:01. Shelley will take on the either Jack Gallagher or Zack Sabre Jr. in the next round.
CRUISERERWEIGHT CLASSIC SECOND ROUND – KOTA IBUSHI VS. WILL OSPREAY; You won’t find a higher octane match anywhere. Will Ospreay and Kota Ibushi are among the most athletic wrestlers in the world, and it showed here. Their exchanges were breathtakingly fast, but what stood out was how Ospreay was willing to trade strikes with Ibushi. Ibushi wrecked him with some brutal ones. Ospreay managed to get him down and attempt a 630, but Ibushi got his knees up. From there, he lit Ospreay with a series of brutal strikes, before ending him with a Golden Star Bomb in 13:38. Ibushi meets the winner of Cedric Alexander vs. TJ Perkins.
The fans gave the incredible main event a standing ovation. Ibushi and Ospreay shook hands and embraced in front of the appreciative crowd.
