Hey! Just a thought I've had recently...
I've been working in retail for two years, working on a third. The pay is great for the job type, and I can honestly say that it isn't too difficult, outside of the one or two difficult customers a day. I work in an area related to hobbies of mine, so it's not boring. I'm naturally somebody who tries to ensure that everything is going smooth. Generally at work, we have daily requirements to maintain our areas. I do that, and I've noticed that managers have been coming to me for other things. I'm someone who knows a lot in the store, as I trained to be dept. manager last year. Keeping this in mind, I still work hard. I guess I was raised to work hard? I don't mean to sound entitled, I just have a habit of going above and beyond. Sure, I get recognized at work for this...but I've been realizing lately, that I work harder than everyone else. I'll be the guy who cleans my area, the other areas surrounding my area, and I'll do it exceptionally. I'll even keep freight maintained and clean up our backroom area, which isn't required of me. I just like to make sure anything involved with my work area is in good shape. However, when others are scheduled, they'll merely do what's required, clean their area in the bare minimum way.
I've noticed that managers don't really ask them to do additional tasks. I realize it's because they think higher of me, and that they know I'll get it down. But I'm being paid the same as everyone else. Why am I working harder? I've tried to stay under the radar as of late, but I feel like I'm not putting in enough work. Granted, there are a number of unwritten perks that come with being an overachiever. If I needed tomorrow off, for whatever reason, a manager will find a way to get me the day off because they know that I'm a hard worker. I don't know that the courtesy is given to the others, and I've seen instances where it isn't.
So which do you prefer? Would you rather fly low, and avoid the extra attention? Or are you somebody who always attempts to go above and beyond your expectations? There are pros and cons to both, and I figured I'd just get a little brain stimulation going with a discussion. How do you feel about standing out or flying low? How do you manage to consistently stay low? How do you always find a way to stand out?

I'm the same way man. I'm a hard worker and go above and beyond my job description on a daily basis. I've been recognized by my mangers and my co workers often come to me with questions. I feel as though I should be getting paid more than most of my co workers but I realize that if I continue to work hard the money will come with it. It may not be in the form of a raise but I'm able to pick up more hours because my mangers know that when I'm working everything runs smoothly. I've been asked if I was intrested in a supervisor position but it's not realistic at the time because of school.
In my opinion you should work as hard as you can every time your on the clock, it makes everything run smoother and no one likes working with someone who does the bare minimum to get by.
You sound like you'd be an awesome co-worker btw haha.

Yeah I agree......I work my ass off because I want the day to go as quickly as humanly possible......nice side effect is people recognise me as a good worker......and I now a good name in work.
I have worked with folks who do the bare minimum and I tell ya this....sooner or later? people start to dislike them because their feet dragging WILL effect you in someway or another.
Just my 2 pennies.....

For me I'm kinda both. Somedays I work nonstop and go above and beyond. Others, I want to barely leave my desk. I'd say 3/5 days I go above and beyond, while the other 2 I just do what asked

Like you said most supervisors and even peers will help you out if you need time off or with whatever else you may need their help in. I say take pride in your work and go above and beyond.

When I worked at Toys R Us I freaking did my best and always finished up what the manager required me to do, but then for some reason the employees snitch on me saying that I wasn't doing anything. Keep in mind I finished early so I was helping customers if they needed my help. Anyways my manager believed them all and eventually was going to let me go. I explained my reasons but he didn't really believe me so instead he decided to give me one last chance and throughout the weeks I eventually proved to him that I was a great worker.

I stand out because I can do everything there is to do at my job and I can do it well, and not many people can do that.
Not to mention we had a big meeting the other day about firings and promotions, and there's only 2 of us who ever speak up, talk about what we don't like and what we're concerned about, and one of them is me.
If you're under the radar, they wouldn't think twice about why they should keep you. If you stand out, you're always a part of the conversation.

I've done both in past jobs that I've had. In my first job I kind of had the mentality that since this is my first ever job, there's no reason for me to be lazy and I should go all out. It was a stockroom gig and I put in a good amount of hard work. In my sub team of three, the other two had a habit of just sitting around and waiting for knocking off time if we finished our stuff early. But I'd go off somewhere else and find something to do. After a while I became the guy who got to go out on deliveries to other stores and even be a navigator and banksman for trucks that needed to be shown to a different warehouse.
On the other hand when I was working football stadium security I just kept quite and did only what I had to. I'm not fond of dealing with the public but we could only really help them if they came to us anyway.

Definitely stand out. I'm almost 30. Will be in September. In that time I've had two jobs. The first I was there from the time I was almost 18 until I was almost 24. In that time I did nearly everything I could in the company and when I got ready to leave the fought to keep me. Offered things others wouldn't have gotten. In the end it was just time for me to go. But I know I was valued for how much they tried to keep me. Now with this current job, my managers trust me and because of that I get opportunities others don't

We live in a world where having a strong work ethic (especially with younger generations) is hard to find. Don't look at your positive trait as a negative. You even said that your work doesn't go unnoticed. Let those other people just go through the motions. The chances of them accomplishing great things aren't as high as yours.
I think my family life is responsible for my strong work ethic. When I was born, my parents literally had nothing. They had to skip meals just to buy me diapers. But they worked their butts off at minimum wage jobs & moved up the workforce ladder & were amazing providers to my sister & I. We always had food on the table, clothes to wear, & toys to play with. Their hard work gave my sister & I opportunities in life that they never had. Its made me realize that at the very least, I owe it to my parents to work as hard as I possibly can, just so their hard work wasn't for nothing.

Depends. If it's standing out for being a F up I'd rather fly under the radar. Before I got injured at UPS I was someone all the center managers wanted to "borrow" when they needed help, because they knew I would get whatever route they needed to be covered done without any drama.

I take pride in my work ethic. If someone asks me to do something, I do it without arguing. I do know when people take advantage of me, which is easy to spot. I'm respectful, and easy going. My managers recognize that. I've been employeed for about 3 weeks at my newest job, and as far as I know, everyone there likes me, and knows I get my tasks done.

I ALWAYS always go above and beyond my expectations. Even though I do it with both genders, I would only suggest doing it with a lady.
