I will go on the record and state that there has never been a perfect era in wrestling. The wrestling industry is designed to carry flaws from within. Many will gravitate on the nostalgia the Attitude Era possesses and the same holds true to those who remember the Hogan Era. Some fans of wrestling today will say that The Rock needs to come back, as does Steve Austin and many other legends ad stars of the past. The WWE has been doing their best to develop new stars. Granted, some of the writing is pure ****, every performer has to make it work. The same holds true for any persona/gimmick. I am willing to state many thought The Undertaker was such a goofy, cartoon character when he arrived on to the scene.
Mark Calaway made The Undertaker character work. Over time, he evolved into something that the audience can connect with. Ray Leppan (Adam Rose) is doing his best to make the gimmick of Adam Rose work. People expect the gimmick to be a success right out of the gate. Was The Undertaker an overnight success? Not at all. Was The Rock an overnight success? Nope. You have to allow for all of these gimmicks blossom to fully see what it is all about. You can't have somebody debut and light the world on fire. Did Windham Lawrence Rotunda light the world on fire immediately when he re-emerged as Bray Wyatt? Ask yourself that.
I have has tons of disagreements about wrestling from those I've met outside of here. My mentality is to seek out footage of stuff you have never seen. I have been watching the RAW's from 1994 and so far I am loving it. Despite the squash matches, the storytelling was really good. The storytelling was good even in the Attitude Era but let's be honest here, the Attitude Era is not "wrestling." The Attitude Era was all about crash TV, three-minute TV matches, over-the-top characters, sex, and deviated away from what wrestling is all about. Many older fans won't look at that era fondly because most of the stuff has not aged well at all.
I am a fan of the current WWE product merely because we see stellar matches and I am glad it has been more action and less talking as of late. I can sense that a good chunk of wrestling fans don't know jack **** and tend to gravitate on things that are unrealistic.

I always say, today's product is actually very good, if you can get your head out of your ass long enough to watch. Especially the in-ring portion of the show. I love how everyone complained about Sheamus vs Del Rio on RAW, when it was actually a great match. |

There are too many people who hate on everything these days - but the current WWE product isn't great. The three hour Raws hurt. They still focus on the top of the card too much.
There were two peak periods for pro wrestling in my lifetime - the mid late 80s Hulkamania and the nwo/WWF Attitude era. Sadly, nothing since the early 2000s has come close to an era of greatness. Everything was just more fun and exciting those days. And it seems like whenever something is catching fire Vince puts a damper on it.

It's like that with anything though. Not just wrestling.
People always remember things from their childhood more fondly and will always say the movies, video games, etc. were better back then.

I've never been stuck in any era. The Rose thing, though, I don't agree with. I never would have been a fan of his. When I was a kid I actually hated the joke characters more than I do now because it those were the characters that made it embarrassing to be a wrestling fan. Nowadays I don't care, but I still don't like Rose. I don't see any legs for the gimmick, he doesn't impress me in the ring, and his finisher is horrible.
The only era I actually hated was the beginning of the PG era with the guest hosts for RAW. 2008 thought early 2011 I didn't watch a single episode because it was terrible and I couldn't support it. 2011 to now, though, it's been great and I've had a blast being a fan again.

Well I never understood it. I grew up on the Monday night wars. And yet I find myself fast forwarding through a lot of those shows on the network. Anything with guys like DX, Austin, Foley, Rock, Taker, Vince, etc is gold but there is a lot of garbage as well.
I feel the AE or MNW era is 50% nostalgia 50% substance.
The reason it was so exciting is because of switching back and forth and never knowing what would happen.
Now a days we are hearing reports about WM matches and even Summer Slam matches 6 months out and more times then not they are true.
Theres no more surprises. Every return is spoiled, every debut is spoiled, heel/face turns are spoiled, there's so much that is ruined in pro wrestling because of the internet.
Honestly I think that's why I find myself watching Beyond the ring, WM Rewind, Legends of Wrestling etc more then actual in ring product. With the internet there is no more mystery to wrestling which has caused me to become more interested in the behind the scenes aspect of the business. And how things came to be.
If WWE could keep their plans hidden and actually shock the fans people wouldn't complain as much.

I started watching wrestling in January 1999 so I'll always have a fondness for the Attitude Era, but I'll admit that a lot of crap stuff happened( Mae Young stripping & giving birth to a hand, Pat Patterson vs Gerald Brisco in an evening gown match, Kennel from Hell & a lot more). The Attitude Era is gone, it's never gonna come back & it wouldn't work today.

It was a simpler time in the wrestling business so it's not a fair comparison with Adam Rose (or even The Rock as fans were getting cynical as hell by 1996/97), but Taker was absolutely a success from the start. WWF fans had never seen anything like that character, and he had those crowds in the palm of his hand from day one. |

I Love Attitude era! But I personally think it's annoying how much hype it gets.
I said it before, I feel bad for todays roster, many superstars actually go out and do everything they can to entertain the fans yet you have "fans" are bringing up the past as if it'll be back. C'mon guys, our era is done, they're all old and all they need to do is pass the torch. As for me, I just watch a bunch of re-runs, attitude era is comedy.
Only complaint I have about todays era is , push the right superstars. When I 1st seen Drew Mcintyre, I thought he was gonna be a good main eventer someday. Sometime past and I see him air guitaring, making him into a complete joke. I don't know what happened since I didn't tune in but I feel like they dropped the ball on that one.

The WWF knew they had a sure thing with The Undertaker when he started getting cheered at the 1991 Survivor Series. His match with Jimmy Snuka was designed to make 'Taker look good. The reason the business was simpler back then because there was a lot less TV time and the shows were easier to book. Give some of these newer talents some time (Bo Dallas, Rusev, Adam Rose) to shine. Does it ever occur to anybody that one of the reasons why some of these writers don't understand the premise of some of these characters from NXT? People being stuck in a certain time period is common. Hell, I have met people who are stuck in the ****ing 70's. That is life and people have to deal with it. |

it's called opinion.. they can speak their mind all they want...... I still watch modern wrestling, but IMO wrestling today sucks compared to then... it's all opinion... and if you ain't down with that,..then I've got 2 words for ya!!!

I won't go into some long rant here, but I think the AE is highly overrated. Was it good? Good is a subjective term ,but it was enjoyable. But high attendance numbers and buyrates don't equate to quality for me, considering you have Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber selling out stadiums and while I'm not against their fans, I don't find them to be all that great in terms of music. It was just the right product at the right time. But I think it was a long term setback for wrestling. People became so used to that over the top, in your face, car crash TV that they never were able to get away from it. For every Rock promo, you had stuff like the Oddities. For every awesome Triple H/Austin match, there were horrible 3 minute matches. I mean, look at a PPV from that time frame and it seems like it was just trying to cram as much in a three hour span as possible.
Stuff that people complain about now, existed back then, but it's so overlooked because it was this "golden era" of wrestling. I think it hurt wrestling in the long run and what people expected from a wrestling company coming out of that era, really took away from the beauty of it. People want swerves and blood and unpredictability, not realizing that too much of something, kills it. Wrestling isn't bad because you can see things coming from a mile away, you get that point because you read spoilers and you've been watching for so long.
NXT put on a hell of a show tonight and the last three matches I watched, enjoyed, and didn't really know who was gonna win. I didn't read spoilers or tentative plans, I just watched it and I enjoyed it. A bit off topic, but I think people get so worked up on "what's wrong" with wrestling or being arm chair bookers, when they are better of just sitting back and watching it.
The Attitude Era was a revolutionary time for wrestling, but I think today's product is just as good, if not better in some aspects. I don't mind the PG rating because it makes them get creative and try to come up with interesting scenarios and characters, rather than relying on the crutch of swearing or coming up with outlandish and over the top segments. The in ring stuff is better and probably safer, considering a lot of people came out of the Attitude Era in horrible shape with the hardcore matches, concussions, and stuff.
I dunno, I just think it was good, it was entertaining, but it wasn't some golden age of wrestling, at least, not entirely. We didn't have reality TV, Youtube, and all that. So that was reality TV, that was our world star or whatever. The Godfather, Val Venis, sex jokes, TNA(not the wrestling company), Austin feuding with Vince, and all that, it was raw and in your face, but it wasn't always good.
