www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/10/gus-van-sant-rumored-to-be-directing-death-noteThough not yet publicly confirmed, it appears Gus Van Sant will take over as the director for the American film adaptation of Death Note, a hugely successful Japanese manga series. The news comes from The Tracking Board. The site says Van Sant will take over for Shane Black, who departed to direct the new Predator movie. “The film follows the story of a high school student who finds a mysterious notebook that lets him instantly kill any person by writing their name in the book. As the student’s body count piles up, a nameless FBI agent begins tracking him.” Van Sant is best known for directing Good Will Hunting and 2008’s Milk, both of which nabbed him Best Director Oscar nominations. He’s also had some experience in the thriller genre, directing the panned 1998 remake of Psycho and some modest but better received movies such as To Die For and Paranoid Park. The original Death Note serial ran from 2003 to 2006 and sold more than 25 million copies. It spawned a series of video games, a TV series and several live-action movies in Japan. -----------------------I know there are some fans of this on here so show yourself! Who else is excited and or intrigued if they have never heard of this before?

Their description is wrong. L is after Light on his own accord, he is not contracted by anyone. Now I'm mad.
Haha, in seriousness I am geeked. Americans have a tendency to bastardize Japanese stuff (see the DragonBall movies, or One Piece as a whole) but this is the kind of stuff non-Otaku's here could get into because it gets very gritty.
As long as the casting is good, and they find someone incredibly hot and willing to wear the (lack of) amount of clothes Misa Misa wears, we are golden.
Curious how they are going to handle Ryuk, Gelus and Rem though. The Japanese Live Action did an ok job with the CGI, I would imagine we will CGI them too...gonna be interesting.

I don't think it'll be a success. Even the canon story itself turned down in quality almost half-way through the story. I actually hope they make some differences to the story.

Well unless they plan on making a series of movies out of it, the canon is pretty straightforward. Warning: Not really spoilers but could be below just saying. *** *** Light finds the Death Note. L comes after him. Kira loses his mind. The 12 names. Misa is still one of the hottest characters ever. Second Kira. Which book? *** *** Pretty straightforward stuff. Yeah it limps to the finish, but you gotta admit, if someone watches it and at the end has to wonder which book was real when it comes to Kira and L...that was edge of my seat sh*t when I first saw it. I have always said if ANY anime/manga would pick up here, it would be Death Note. Glad to see it coming to fruition.

That's pretty crazy news. Van Sant is a weird choice, but I'm sure he can do a good job. It's been some time since he's realy tried to prove he can do something.

Please have Gary Oldman play Light's dad.

I've seen the other movies and they weren't THAT bad. But still, I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. It could go either way.

I expect whoever takes this to follow the bare basic outline like I listed above, but go unique from there. From what I read a while ago, the creator of the manga/series is going to have a heavy hand in whatever they do, so that could be cool.

I hope it works out.
I actually would rather have a mini-series or a straight up tv show because there is a LOT of material to squeeze into a 2 hour movie and currently TV shows are just awesome if they are given time to develop characters (Breaking Bad, True Detective, etc).
