So as anyone who has seen the Emmy nominations, an all but confirmed outcome came true: the drama war between Breaking Bad and True Detective has become a reality.
Now surprises can certainly happen. I mean, a large portion of the awards last year were given to surprise winners (Jeff Daniels, Tony Hale, Bobby Cannavale). But it's a safe bet that in the two categories in which they will be most competetive (Lead Actor In A Drama Series and Best Drama Series; there are other categories in which they are competing but i'd like to focus on these two).
I've never once had a hard time in picking who I wanted to win in the various Emmy Award presentations of the past. Breaking Bad was so good that it was always easy to bet on them. They didn't always win sure, but there was no doubt of the impact they made.
Fast forward to July 2014, and I have no idea how this is going to go down. True Detective in my eyes is probably the best first season of any show i've ever seen. Having said that, I also believe Breaking Bad's final season to be the best season period (in term of a drama series).
And don't even get me started on Matthew McConaughey and Bryan Cranston. I'm leaving out Woody because even he has said that he's voting for McConaughey (Woody was a beast too).
Rust Cohle became in eight episodes a top 10 drama character for sure. And I think Walter White tops that list. But this will be the closest category in my opinion. Back when it was believed that True Detective would submit for the miniseries category, I think that a Breaking Bad sweep was inevitable which would've been awesome. Now I'm not so sure, especially with the Aaron Paul/Peter Dinklage battle on the horizon. The only safe bet I feel is even there anymore is Anna Gunn for Supporting Actress In A Drama Series.
But let's leave this to True Detective and Breaking Bad. Who do you think will walk away with the gold? And I mean specifically, because there is a high likelihood that both shows win separate awards.
To combine some quotes: "Time is a flat circle..... and I am the danger."

My belief that majority of award shows are full of crap will be capped off if Breaking Bad doesn't sweep.

I don't care about award shows, but I LOVE both of these series. I think True Detective takes it, honestly. Breaking Bad is one of the best shows of all time, but the final season was not the strongest season of the show. I'm not saying it was bad at all, easily a damn 9.5 out of 10, easily, but there were parts that shined brighter. True Detective showed up and ing exploded onto the scene. Woody and Matthew destroyed the entire season. Just on fire the entire time. Gotta think True Detective takes it.

No idea who's going to win but I want True Detective only because Breaking Bad won last year and I find there's far too many great shows on TV for there to not be parity. That's especially true in why I want McConaughey to win. I mean Cranston is amazing and all but he has what? Three Emmys for it? Pass the baton, brother.

I doubt both awards will go to the same show so I expect Breaking Bad to win Best Drama Series again while McConaughey will win Best Drama Lead Actor, preventing Bryan Cranston from tying Dennis Franz's record of 4 Drama Lead Actor Emmys (for the same show).
Of course it could go the other way where True Detective wins Best Drama Series and Cranston wins Best Drama Lead Actor.
It will really depend on what episode McConaughey and Cranston submit (as well as the other 4 men in the category) since an upset happened last year in this category it could happen this year.

I Love both of these shows. But my vote goes to Breaking Bad. Its 6 seasons of greatness topped off by a final season and finale that were excellent......something that seems increasingly difficult to do nowadays.
no denying the greatness of True Detective and Mathew Mc but I think BB deserves it more.

This article is kinda long but it does a great job of showing how Breaking Bad for sure has the edge in winning Best Drama Series at the Emmys.
5 key Emmy categories that give 'Breaking Bad' the edge for Best Drama
www.goldderby.com/news/6815/emmys-breaking-bad-house-of-cards-true-detective-entertainment-news-86429753.html "Game of Thrones" may more Emmy nominations than any other program this year (19, or 20 if you count Best Interactive Program) but that does not necessarily mean it is more likely to win Best Drama Series. Categories vary in how indicative they are of broad support. Nominations in five particular races have proven especially vital for winning Best Drama: Writing, Directing, Casting, Editing, and Sound Mixing. Consider: "Homeland" was thought to be a surprise Best Drama winner in 2012 because it had the fewest nominations of the six nominees, but unlike "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" that year, it had all five key nominations. All seven times since 2000 when one or more dramas has had all five, one has won Best Drama. This year, "Breaking Bad" and "House of Cards" have them all for the first time, "Mad Mad" is missing all five for the first time, and "Downton Abbey" is missing writing, casting, and editing. Despite leading in total nominations, "Game of Thrones" missed Best Editing. 2008 was the only year since 2000 when the Best Drama champ ("Mad Men") was not up for editing. However, "Game of Thrones" was nominated in the category last year and made a significant gain elsewhere this year with its first directing bid since its pilot. 2011 was the only year since 2000 that the Best Drama ("Mad Men") was not up for directing. "Game of Thrones" also grew in nominations by taking a second Best Cinematography slot, its first Stunt Coordination nomination in three years, and a long-awaited first music nomination. "House of Cards" was snubbed in Writing and Sound Mixing last year and strategically entered just one episode in each this time, and it paid off both times. "24" in 2006 is the only show since 2000 to win Best Drama without a writing nod, though it was a prior writing winner. "House of Cards" also exceeded expectations in higher-profile categories with guest nominations for long-shots Reg E. Cathey and Kate Mara. Sound Mixing is the only one of the five key categories that snubbed "True Detective." Thankfully for the show, it's the least crucial of those awards, as "The West Wing" in 2002 and three seasons of "Mad Men" can attest. But unlike "House of Cards" with its guest actors or "Game of Thrones" with its overall gains, there were no unexpected surpluses of support for "True Detective" in the nominations. However, "Homeland" overcame that two years ago, so don't rule it out. After submitting two episodes for Best Editing consideration each of the last two years and getting all nominated, "Breaking Bad" risked vote-splitting this year when it entered four, more than the two from "True Detective" or the three from "Game of Thrones" and "House of Cards." However, three "Breaking Bad" entries got nominated, alongside single episodes of "Cards" and "True Detective." Last year, "Breaking Bad" became only the third Best Drama since 2000 to win without a Casting nomination, but it was understandable because that award favors new series. "24" in 2006 and "The Sopranos" in 2007 were at least as old when they won without casting bids. But this year, "Breaking Bad" picked up its first ever casting nomination and is now the only drama other than "Law & Order" with a nomination after its fifth year. "Breaking Bad" also broke into other categories where it had never contended: Best Art Direction and Makeup (both prosthetic and non-prosthetic), which usually favor period or fantasy fare. These are not strongly correlated with Best Drama, but they do indicate a widespread academy desire to acknowledge the show. Along with dual Best Writing nominations, "Breaking Bad" is the favorite based on these nominations, but "Game of Thrones," "True Detective," and especially "House of Cards" are within striking distance. -------------------------------BTW a good amount of the experts that predict these awards (journalists from various places) have already posted their predictions and while they can change atm the votes are: Ten of our eleven Emmyologists -- Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Scott Feinberg (THR), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Tom O'Neil (Gold Derby), Steve Pond (The Wrap), Matt Roush (TV Guide), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), freelancer Ken Tucker, Robert Bianco (USA Today) and Lynette Rice (People) -- are predicting that AMC's "Breaking Bad" will pick up a bookend trophy for its final season. One pundit -- Mike Cidoni (AP) -- expects an upset in this race by HBO's rookie anthology "True Detective." In Drama Actor, all but two of our Experts expects Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey ("True Detective") to win for his sole season on "True Detective." Robert Bianco joins Tom O'Neil in forecasting Emmy #4 for Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"). www.goldderby.com/news/6807/emmy-predictions-breaking-bad-true-detective-entertainment-news-13579086.html------------------------------So like I said before, it looks like BB will take Drama but McConaughey will take Lead Actor in a Drama.

I'm torn.
I have a bit of bias toward Breaking Bad, being that I consider it to be, hands down, the greatest television show to ever air. At the same time, True Detective is undeniably good, it represents a field that we don't see all that often anymore (a true character study), and its performances were absolutely phenomenal.
I'm not going to be mad either way. I suppose I'd prefer Breaking Bad take best drama, while the best actor category is a true toss up. Cranston deserves it on legacy alone, but McConaughey gave a career performance that's deserving of every bit of praise it gets and then some.

I've yet to see True Detective, but I have seen Game of Thrones and House of Cards. Cards isn't in Breaking Bad's league, and while I absolutely Game of Thrones, I don't see it on BB's level. I like GoT more, but I know which is the better crafted show. And again, nothing against GoT as it's incredible.

True Detective is one of the most incredibly things I've seen, technically, in a long time. In 26 years of watching, studying, and making movies/shows -- it's THAT good. It's not even in the top 3 of my favorite shows, but I dig it based solely on how well it's done. And yes, Matt M. steals it.

I've seen both seasons of House of Cards but I feel that this second season was a bit of a letdown, but still very good to great. However, none of this is a slight on those shows, just how high Breaking Bad's level is.

To me it's like you have one son who is awesome and has made you proud for years, and then you have a new son who is equally awesome which you didn't think would be possible. And now you have to choose one.
Breaking Bad to me is the all time best. Best acting. Best story. Best closure. It was as close to perfect as you could get. True Detective is the only thing I have seen that I honestly believe comes close.
So as you can imagine, it's hard for me to choose. So I will go split. Best Drama: Breaking Bad. Best Actor: Matthew Mcconaughey.

As great as the show is, there's just too much great competition to see it walk away arms full... There are at LEAST 4 shows that can have an argument made for them WINNING -- I'll be bored as hell to watch one show take them all (that's even shows I like)...

I recommend finding a weekend where you don't have much to do, and drop the money on it. I'm watching it for a second time now, and there's a TON I missed the first time around. Pay attention to everything that's said, a lot of stuff you see...if it seems even mildly important -- it is. And by the end of the season you'll go back and think "Huh" -- it's damn intricate.

Breaking Bad IMO! I loved TD, but that 2nd to last episode of BB gave me chills!

I'd give it to True Detective. BB S5 was incredible, but TD came from nowhere and instantly won the hearts of millions.
I'd also definitely put House of Cards and Game of Thrones on the same level. However, this year TD was the best of an incredible bunch.

I'd be fine if either won, but I'd lean towards True Detective. I was totally blown away by it.

McCongauhey will win best actor. He gave his best performance ever in True Detective. Cranston already won three times, and although he gave a great performance, it was more or less the same Walt from previous seasons.Don't think he's going to get it this year.
Both shows had great writing, and awesome acting, however, True Detective has the edge in direction and cinematography. So my predictions are Best Direction and Cinematography going to Fukunaga and Arkapaw for True Detective and best writing going to Vince Gilligan for Breaking Bad. Overall best Drama Series: True Detective.

It's probably splitting hairs but it just has a "it's True Detective's turn" feel to it. It was masterfully written and even more brilliantly acted. McConaughey and Harrelson could split the trophy in half and I would feel good about it. It's almost unfair to Harrelson that McConaughey's character was so much more intricate in his struggles with substance abuse, the loss of his daughter, his exploration of religion, and his truly obsessive personality. I know that True Detective is the new guy on the block and it feels fresh and exciting but I really do feel it's superior to BB if we are comparing those 8 episodes to the singular last season.
I guess I'm expecting MConaughey and Pizzolatto to definitely win and then best Drama is a bit of a coin toss. I personally prefer Game of Thrones to Breaking Bad though too.
