So something I've always wondered since watching Back to the Future for the first time as a kid is how did Doc and Marty become friends? In three movies, a video game and several bonus features and specials this has never been explained (at least not to my knowledge). Doc and Marty seem to be VERY close but it's never even mentioned in passing how, where or why they met and became friends. Was Marty hired as an assistant? It seems that way in the first movie but is never fully addressed. Was Doc paying Marty? Anybody have insight on this?

Gay lovers. Subtext. You have to read between the lines.
Look at those eyes. Look how Marty is saying "I need you. I'm with Jennifer, because I'm confused. You're the only one there for me" and Doc's eyes are saying "Great Scott!"

Doc was givin' him the ol' flux capaciter long before they reached 1955.

You know what -- I will say this. Back to the Future doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves (most of the generations younger than mine, don't even know WHAT IT IS!!!) --
It most definitely had a direct effect on me wanting to make movies. As much as T2, JP, or Jaws...it's up there with those movies, and I just don't get why it's not spoken of in a higher regard...it should be.

I always regard it as a near perfect movie. It has everything, action, sci fi, romance, comedy. It's always on tv and it's kind that I can watch over and over and still enjoy as much each time.
The third one sometimes gets crapped on and while it isn't as good as the first two, if the first two weren't so brilliant then the third one would be regarded as a perfectly great film.

IMO the third one is better than the second. On the DVD they were saying that the second one was quite rushed and didn't come out as well as they wanted it to. IMO it's 1>3>>2.

I've read that in the original script Marty sold bootleg porn tapes at school for Doc but it was obviously changed.

"Okay, from the horse's mouth (yes, I'm the horse -- er, co-writer, co-creator): We never explained it in the movie. But the history of the characters that Bob Zemeckis and I created is this...
For years, Marty was told that Doc Brown was dangerous, a crackpot, a lunatic. So, being a red-blooded American teenage boy, age 13 or 14, he decided to find out just why this guy was so dangerous. Marty snuck into Doc's lab, and was fascinated by all the cool stuff that was there. when Doc found him there, he was delighted to find that Marty thought he was cool and accepted him for what he was. Both of them were the black sheep in their respective environments. Doc gave Marty a part-time job to help with experiments, tend to the lab, tend to the dog, etc.
And that's the origin of their relationship.
- Bob Gale"

Where was this quote from Gale taken from?

I love the 3rd movie. I actually didn't like the second film until I got much older. It's similar to Temple of Doom for me in that regard. I loved cowboys and indians when I was a kid so the third film was right up my alley.
BTTF is brilliant. I can watch any of those films now at any given time. Goonies, Indy, Star Wars, BTTF, they just fall into that timeless category for me.

I never thought of that fully. However, Mrs. Doubtfire getting paid was a different story
