Just got out of the sequel.
Let me start by saying that when I first heard the concept of "The Purge" I LOVED the idea. Then the Ethan Hawke movie came -- and it was turned into a home invasion story. It was...put nicely...NOT what I wanted from the concept. Purge 2, however, IS. And more.
A damn fine time at the movies, Purge: Anarchy is the first real surprise of the Summer for me. I enjoyed it, and recommend going to check it out.
To answer the question most will ask: No, you don't need to see the first, to see this. It stands entirely on it's own.
Overall, it's been a slow but decent Summer at the movies. Better than most people have given it.
Best to Worst, so far:
Amazing Spider-Man 2 Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier X-Men: Days of Future Past The Purge: Anarchy 22 Jump Street Dawn of the Planet of the Apes The Raid 2 Transformers: Age of Extinction Godzilla Neighbors
I'd watch all of them again, except Neighbors, probably. Still need to see Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Jersey Boys that I've missed, so far...
And I'll probably see Sex Tape, and Lucy, and wanna see Hercules, The Fluffy Movie, Guardians, Ninja Turtles, Let's Be Cops, Expendables 3...the Summer's back-heavy.

I might be seeing this later tonight or this weekend.
It looks good so I hope it is better than the first one which I agree was a letdown.

Glad to hear someone who didn't care for the first enjoyed the second.
I absolutely loved the concept, but thought the movie itself ended up being just about as unoriginal as it gets. I'll still check this one out to see if they can salvage the great premise.

I just really didn't like TASM2. Electro was a crapty villain, and it didn't really make sense why he all of the sudden hated spiderman. Spiderman didn't wrong him in any way. Emma Stone was horrendous. Harry Osborne and Peter Parker's friendship just seemed so forced. If they had included Harry in the first movie I think it would have come off better. Also if electro could flow through electricity had Gwen hit him with a car so Peter could easily kill him. I just didn't like the movie. If I could rerank my list I would put AOE lower but I still liked it better than TASM2

Great idea on paper but poorly handled. I said I wasn't going to watch the second one, but I really haven't heard too many bad reviews, so I might change my mind on it.

Can't wait to see the Purge today!! Were there any Easter eggs or references to the family in the first movie? There may have been, if there were, I didn't catch them. The movie stands perfectly fine on it's own. ...or maybe the first movie is THAT forgettable. Seriously, they could have made the entire first movie, the first 15 minutes of this film, to set up the concept -- and would have been just fine. This movie isn't without it's flaws, but as far as being a fan of the concept, goes. It's VASTLY superior to the first film. When i saw the trailer I went "this is what the first movie should have been" -- and that's right. This is exactly what a movie of the concept should be like. The good thing is, conceptually, they can shift it up, and follow various characters, and keep it fresh, moving forward.

I'd also like to note, Frank Grillo should NEVER have been cast as Crossbones...
He's a PERFECT Castle/The Punisher.

Also the little kid in the first movie is the worst character in the history of film

I'm intrigued. The first didn't take full advantage of the concept. This one looks more like what everyone wanted to begin with.
Whenever the "summer' movie season actually begins is a mystery to me. It honestly feels like it starts in early spring, perhaps even before then after the "award season" is over. There was a ton of big budget popcorn flicks in the early months of the year too.
For me, The Grand Budapest Hotel is the best film I've seen so far. Lego, Cap, X-men, Raid 2, Muppets and Snowpiercer were all fun too. ASM2 and Zilla sucked.

Clearly people were disappointed with the Purge, but I believe this right here is reason enough to wanna watch it...

Blockbuster season for me, kicks off with the first "spectacle" movie of the year. This year, it was Cap 2. Usually in late April/early May. It's less "Summer" season now, more "Blockbuster" season. Just happens to line with everyone being out of school, and more interested in leaving the house. I still don't think Godzilla sucked -- I was just incredibly let down by it. ASM2 was a fantastic Blockbuster, and a great Spidey flick. Couldn't have asked for more from a Spidey fan, except slightly better/longer battles.

Just saw it and it was awesome. Definitely better than the first movie
Trying to leave this spoiler free but kinda spoiler on an Easter egg. The black guy from the first movie makes an appearance as he is one of Carmelo's men

I agree it was way better than the first. And is it just me or was that lead guy basically The Punisher? lol. He was awesome.

They never should have cast him as Crossbones in Cap 2...he's perfect for Punisher. *edit* And it's a DAMN LIE if they say Punisher wouldn't work as an R rated movie. Half the audience at the movie last night were kids under 14 years old. This movie was no more violent, ultimately, than Punisher would need to be.

I was so excited for it because I thought the concept had the potential to make a fantastic movie but I was completely disappointed. I saw Anarchy last night and I thought it was very good. It wasn't great but it was head and shoulders above the first one. I don't know if it's because I had such low exceptions going into this one that anything decent would've satisfied me but I would suggest checking it out.

The whole time I kept picturing frank grillo as the punisher. Did you know he's 51 years old? I hope I look like that at that age lol.

I was figuring early 40s, at most...mid 30s would have been believable. Did he seem a bit thinner in this movie than he did in Cap 2? I feel like he lost some muscle mass...maybe it was just the slightly looser clothing in this one?

I think he might have trimmed down a bit, but regardless he was in great shape and looked like a total badass. It could have been the trenchcoat though that made him look thinner.
