With 3D printers on the rise and prices slowly but surely becoming more affordable, does anyone think this'll impact the prices of company owned brands such as Mattel? I mean, yes the prices for these figures are ridiculous now. But can we "look forward" to an even bigger increase in prices in the future? If this has been discussed before, so what?. And if it needs to be moved, by all means move it.

Printing out wrestling figures could probably be seen as copyright infringement, so I don't know.

I'd definitely print my very own Topless Foley.

I don't think it will make a difference on pricing. Just because 3d printers are becoming more affordable doesn't mean the price of Mattels materials are going down.

It will be a LONNNNNNGGGG time. The cost of 3D printers is not yet commercially friendly. Also, the quality you get out of a 3D printer isn't as good as you suspect it to be unless you have a higher quality (more expensive one). Not to mention the painting and/or cost of paint. At best right now, 3D printers are good for maybe custom accessories that you'd have to clean up and paint yourself, and figure stands.

I think you'd be surprised just how crappy a job a 3D printer would do for an action figure. Maybe if you wanted to print old WCW galoob style figures it would work, but however Mattel casts their plastic and then assembles it (and paints it) is a very special process designed specifically for making toys. If you think 3D printers can do anything and everything as good as multi-million dollar companies who specialize? Well . . .

I could eventually see this being a nice way to get some customized heads but the paint apps would really make this, too, a little prohibitive. Look at the custom/fix up boards to see how difficult it is just to paint eyes without them looking like cartoony doofuses.

If Mattel were smart, they'd sell the blueprints for a print-your-own-figure. lol

the 3D printer is only good for making parts, and or accessories. I would be print out chairs & tables all day long! BUT, I likes my job...so I leave that to someone else to do. maybe the Chumlees of the world. lol

If that's not what you're implying, then how would this technology raise the prices? The only way the price increases on anything is if it becomes harder to get, such as gas prices rising because we're at war with an OPEC nation. I don't see how an influx of 3d printers would make it harder to get Mattels or any other action figure. Your implication as I understood it was that it would be EASIER to get the figs, not harder, because you could print them yourself. Which is why I said, "I think you'd be surprised . . . " Therefore, I don't see any connection between an increase in 3D printing and an increase in the cost of action figs.

Well it certainly looks good, but so does money counterfeited in your typical 2-sided color printer. But once you get it in your hands I bet the quality would be obvious. You'd have to buy a special kind of plastic, which would drive up the cost. Could this thing be played with? It can be posed, but so can the pair of scissors I saw printed on one of these things. I don't know what this is supposed to be as copy of, but that face has very little detail. I think this would be fine for custom figures and accessories, but with paint apps and playablity, I think Mattel and others will be pretty safe for a long time. And as home-use technology grows, so will industrial technology. They'll always be ahead of us. But in 20 years or so, perhaps we will be able to duplicate the figures of today, but in 20 years I doubt we'll be able to make the figures of that day. But who knows!

3D printing is going to make for some incredible customs that are readily available in the next few years. The toy companies and copyright holders will try to stop it, but like digital media piracy, there will never be any putting that cat back into the bag. I recently read an article about how Hasbro is working with customizers to let them sell 3D printed My Little Pony merchandise under an official license in exchange for getting to oversee the quality/content. I think we'll be seeing a lot of that.
I don't think 3D printing will have any effect on figure prices at all, but they're sure to go up in the next few years simply due to inflation and the rising cost of materials.
