With all of the stuff being said by Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin about who the biggest name in WWE history is... Sound off on who you think gets that title?!
I'll start...
It's really a very tough thing to answer as you have a lot of things to consider: number of titles, length of career, merhcandising, etc., but I will vote for Austin.
Now I know I am going to catch a lot of heat for this but I really think that Austin made himself a bigger name at a bigger time in wrestling's history. Look at the timeframe we are talking about where Austin reigned supreme...
The timrframe was probabaly one of the toughest for WWE as WCW was on the verge of putting them out of business. Hogan had gone to WCW, thus taking all his "Hulkamaniacs" with him. WWE was really left with little more than the Undertaker and HBK at the time and WCW kept adding name after name to their roster.
Then, at King of the Ring came those 8 little words that changed everything... "Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!" The next night on Raw "Austin 3:16" shirts were everywhere! The signs... The chants from the crowd! The Austin Era had begun!
I truly believe that the WWE might have been done for if Austin hadn't become what he became. the timing was just right and Austin had the personality that made you either like him or hate him. I alwys felt that Hogan was crammed down out throats with his goody, goody superhero attitude.
I don't know who held more titles in their career, so I will just leave that one alone.
If you break it down to length of career, Hogan wins. Who says that would be true though if Owen Hart hadn't broken Austin's neck. I believe Austin had a lot left in his tank.
If you look at merchandising, Austin kicked Hogan's ass! I remember reading in an article once where Austin's merchandise outsold every other superstar in WWE history, combined. That's gotta be worth something right there. I'm sure that there were more merchandising options in the hey day of Austin's career than in Hogan's, but you can't hold that against good ol' Stone Cold.
Personaly, I always hated Hogan. Even when I was little I didn't like his whole personna. I always liked Ric Flair and the Legion of Doom better than Hogan and his "Say your prayers and take your vitamins crap".
I will not take away from the importance that Hogan had in professional wrestling, but for me, Austin wins hands down. He came along and made the anti-hero the popular thing. it was cool to cheer for a bad guy! I loved it.
I know the Hogan fans out there will pour forth the anger, but I just gave my opinion on the matter. Hulkamamnia can run wild, but Austin's better, and that's the bottom line!
