Hogan, both chronologically and for longevity. He was selling out MSG years before Austin ever trained to be a wrestler, and he was main eventing SummerSlam years after Austin retired.

I've spent the better part of thirty years hating on Hogan so I may not be the right one to answer this. But I always viewed it as Hogan built the house that Austin renovated. Both were so important to the structure of WWE, that there is no right or wrong answer.

Hulk Hogan and it's literally not even a contest. I like Stone Cold and I've never been a big Hulf fan but it's seriously not even a question.
Austin was on top for what, 4 years..and not even 4 full years?
If there was never an NWO, brother, there probably would've never been a Stone Cold. Just sayin

Hogan is the best there is hands down. Everybody always says without vince there would be no hogan but he was kicking a$$ and taking names in awa. Vince pushed him to a whole new level but I believe Hulkamania would have ran wild no matter what. Now stunning Steve Austin was a nobody without vince but you never hear how vince made austin.

Hogan. Hogan is synonymous with wrestling. And singing the days of the week. Hogan doesn't realize that there is only one Thursday in the week.

You cant really compare attendance numbers for those guys though because for whatever reason in the 90's the WWE stopped doing Wrestlemania's at huge arenas, and in Hogan's era there was only 4 PPVs. if you'd add up all the attendance Austin drew as a main event of PPVs it would destroy Hogan
but it's really not a valid point because the eras were so different
The thing that separates them is recognition. If you asked 100 joe blows on the street to name any professional wrestler I'd say about 65 would say "Hulk Hogan" Hulk Hogan has been a name in Wrestling for 30 years, he never really went away.
Austin went away. He had a HUGE run, one for the ages, during the absolute most popular era of wrestling. But he left, and he rarely has come back since. I don't really understand why, but only he truly knows why. Maybe if Austin had been able to continue on and have a longer career it might have changed things, but I doubt it.
Hogan truly was the perfect piece to the puzzle at the perfect time. Of course Hogan wouldn't have been anything without Vince, but you can't compare Vince to wrestlers because he's the promoter, not the entertainer.

I think for me, I've always thought Austin was the most over guy in the history of the business for any one singular point in time. Hogan to me was the most over guy of all time because of longevity.

Hogan was the bigger mainstream draw, Austin sold more merchandise.

In my eyes Austin is the biggest superstar ever. He is my personal favourite ever and without him we would all be stuch watching WCW now. Austin all the way.

Didn't Vince McMahon say Austin was the biggest superstar in WWE history when he inducted him in the HOF? I'd say he knows the true answer better than any of us. The only thing that would put Hogan ahead of Austin in my book is longevity.

This question is who was the bigger WWE star right? That is what the title of this post says. So Hogan's WCW time has nothing to do with this post.
Hogan abandoned the WWE. Austin never left them for another company. And going on merchandise etc.
Austin wins.

Hogan.
Was most popular guy during the AWA years. Most popular guy in WWF years. Was over huge in WCW as a face. Even more over as a heel in WCW. Returned to WWE was most over guy, even moreso than the Rock, who was already way more popular than Austin.
Hogan was the centerpiece when wrestling was it's MOST popular, which was the 80's, NOT the attitude era. And Hogan was the top heel in wrestling during the so called "attitude era" so yeah.
Austin is a distant 2nd at best. If even.
And if they both show up to an event now, who gets the bigger pop? Hogan. Who gets the longer cheers? Hogan.
Austin isn't even that over, honestly. His catchphrases? Sure. But without those, he doesn't get a reaction even half of Hogan.

Hulk Hogan
-Hogan was the top draw in wrestling from 1984-1991 and 1996-1997, 10 years. Stone Cold was the top draw in wrestling in 1998-1999 and 2001, 3 years.
-I cannot argue that Stone Cold sold more merchandise than Hulk Hogan, but during the Hulkamania era, there wasnt WWEShop.com and you couldnt buy wrestling shirts in retail stores. The only place to buy them at the time were at live events or from the mail order catalog in WWF Magazine.
-Hulk Hogan is often associated with entertainment(not just wrestling) in the 80s, as seen in the recent Radio Shack commercial and other nostalgia TV programs. Is Stone Cold associated with entertainment in the 90s?
-People say that Hulk Hogan wouldve been nothing without Vince McMahon, but we have seen what the company is like without a Hogan/Austin-type megastar (New Generation Era, PG Era) and it is not pretty.
