Since Lesnar's now the champion that means that the next time Cena wins the belt he will match Ric Flair's legendary record.
It's hard to believe that Flair's 16 time reigns are about to be matched or even beat and Cena still has a few years left in him so he could win the title multiple more times and set a new record. I'm no Cena fan but you must give the guy credit that is pretty impressive.

I don't dislike John Cena the way that some people do, and he competes in an era where the title changes hands a lot more often but it's still impressive. I'm sure he's going to get close to 20.
I just wish more of his reigns meant something. Like his title win over Alberto Del Rio in 2011 that he held for about three weeks. It was pointless and just added to the total.
But yea, impressive.

Imagine if number sixteen happened at Night of Champions and was ended by Seth Rollins seconds later... Then number eighteen happens at Hell in a Cell.

I was hoping that the authority would come out and say that Cena would never get another shot at the WWE Championship after the embarrassing defeat at Summerslam.
At least it would keep Cena out of the title record books for a year, maybe 2-3 at most. And then they could have a mega storyline where Cena gets one last shot at the title.
You could get an interesting storyline for Cena and honestly he doesn't need the WWE Title anymore he could still be huge and doesnt need to hold the title 40 more times.

It doesn't matter to me. Yes the number looks impressive. But if you look at days as champion, and Cena isn't even close to Flair, or a few others for that matter.
And I know a lot of people disagree with me, but I would not be surprised if Cena doesn't get it back. Of course, him as champion wouldn't surprise me either, but you have to remember that he only had this reign because of Bryan's injury. They're phasing him out of the title picture for the most part, so we'll have to wait and see. But it could really go either way.

It's just a sign of the times, so many PPV's & TV hours, this will become the norm with top babyfaces over the next 20 years.

Still pisses me off that a 5 minute, 2 week or 3 week reign is credited. Completely devalues the Title. I honestly don't see a reason for Cena to win the belt again.

Nobody should ever be a 10, 15 or 20 time world champion. I'm sorry for having "old school thinking" but that's how I feel. It's ridiculous.

It really doesn't bother me at this point. This has been inevitable for awhile now and I'm not going to get worked up because it's happening. I think Lesnar is definitely losing the title back to Cena and it seemingly makes a whole lot of sense for Rollins to then cash-in. 17 passes Flair, so that to me is the "big one" from a kayfabe standpoint that will likely be celebrated in grand fashion by WWE. Cena just barely beats Brock, Brock crushes Cena after the match, in comes Plan B. Brock can walkaway with his head held high because he's a mercenary and the job was to keep the title in the Authority's corner.
I'm fully expecting Cena's 16th title win to be a transition that lasts minutes. Ultimately, Vince Russo is right, at least on some level, that the title is a plot device. I do think it has value and you don't want to make David Arquette your champion but the MITB element is exciting for fans and these kind of title changes occur when telling stories around that case. Also, look at actual championships in the UFC. I know it's not the same thing but a guy can win the strap one fight and lose it the next. Not every guy is Anderson Silva and even he had to lose. Nothing will ever take away from what Ric Flair did, not even drunk Ric Flair haha, but times they are a changing and we just need to relax over something we have absolutely no control over.
Also, WWE has been positioning Cena as their greatest star of all time, at least from a accolade perspective for several months now. They are gearing you up for this moment. You're allowed to be upset about it because we're fans and those kind of things matter to us but it's entirely your fault if you thought this wasn't happening at this point.

Pretty much this. It doesn't mean nearly what it did when Flair did it, but a record is a record. Historians will know the difference, but for a large majority of fans, a greater number is a greater number. I mean, truthfully, it was nearly inevitable in this era. The guy has been on top of the company for just shy of ten years. With two championships floating around for the vast majority of that time period, it's a wonder he didn't pass the mark sooner.

I agree with a lot of comments here in regards to how the title devalued with reigns that don't last particularly long. I think the MITB angles where people have cashed in and won for example have been great storylines, having said that. I feel Brock should hold the title for a fairly long time (Unless Taker wants to fight him for it). Cena shouldn't get reign #16 for some time to come IMO.

I'm a huge Flair fan, but it doesn't matter. The times are different, and that's just how it is now. The brand extension has a lot to do with it as well. Plus, as much as I love Flair, his last several title reigns were complete jokes as well.

WWE only acknowledges flair as a 16 time world champ, but if they want to count a 5 minute 2 week or 3 week reign by Cena then I want to count all of Flairs reigns when he lost the title to keep the fans happy then won it back the next night so in my mind, Flairs a 26 time world champ when Cena passes 26 then I'll say he beat flair

I really don't care. I like Flair - I like Cena. I didn't get mad at Cal Ripken for breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak.
