I have noticed on various posts here that most people call a new headsculpt a "headscan" or "scan"... Why is that?
I know that a lot of the current superstars are scanned, but I saw in a couple posts where people commented on the new E30 LOD Hawk's "headscan" and the new Andre the Giant. Am I wrong, or hadn't they passed away before that technology was ever available?! I don't really have a problem with people calling the headsculpt a scan, but I found it odd that the term would be used for everyone. Looks like a lot of talented sculptors are not getting their due credit. Let's congratulate THEM on the great likeness, not some machine and a computer.

The term "headscan" is used for almost every new figure I see come out, from legends to current superstars. I remember that term being used only when superstars were actually scanned by a computer and then sculpted by machine. I believe Gentle Giant worked with Jakks to do them. Headsculpts would be the correct term for superstars that are no longer living, correct? I just found it odd.

Good thing you don't have a problem with it because people aren't going to stop. You know what they mean, just let it go.

Everyone is used to referring to the expressions on current superstars' faces as headscans, so really headsculpts is just a synonym.

Why does everyone park in a driveway and drive on a park way? Why does a ship carry cargo, and a car carry shipments? Why are there braille dots on a drive-through ATM keypad? Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?

Again, just asking because you can't "scan" someone's head if they have been dead for years.

I thought Mattel made figures through 3D modelling, not physical sculpting, or am I mistaken? If I'm correct, wouldn't that mean that the term "headsculpts", too, would be inaccurate?

For wrestlers who have pasted they scan photos from all angles to get the head scan. Then sculptors touch it up. But all the heads are scans from Gentle Giant Studios.

Maybe they're using it as a verb and not a noun?

I always wondered the same thing. I think it's just because in the earlier days of Wfigs, from the TTL days up to just before the Classic Superstars line, all (or most) figures were using scans to sculpt the heads. So when people signed up, they saw other people saying "scan" and "headscan" and just copied that. It's just one of those terms that people use without thinking.

"Headscan" has just become the generic term, same as "photoshopping" has become the generic term for image editing (even when another program is used). Plus, in addition to 3D scanning real people, nowadays some toy companies use photo scanning software too, which scans a 2D photo and outputs a 3D model of the face.
Also digital sculpting has become much more common in recent years too, so really the industry is moving further and further away from traditional "sculpts".

No problem there was an article about it a few years back in either Lee's or Tomarts magazines where they addressed how they scaned deceased wrestlers.
